It's well known that many Republicans in Washington do not like Sen. Ted Cruz, but the full extent of that antipathy is coming to light this week as several current and former lawmakers say they prefer Donald Trump as the GOP nominee, although they have little regard for either man.
Some GOP consultants and strategists started the rumblings in recent days. Then Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad told Republicans in his state to oppose Cruz because of the senator's opposition to ethanol subsidies.
But the story broke wide open on Wednesday when former Senate Majority Leader and 1996 Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole said he would choose Trump over Cruz, going so far as to say a Cruz nomination would be "cataclysmic" for the Republican Party. Another former GOP Senate leader, Trent Lott, has said the same.
But Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, a Cruz supporter, is not swayed. While honoring Dole for his heroism in World War II, Gohmert told WND and Radio America many mainstream Republicans are worried about what a President Cruz would mean for them.
"You don't get any more establishment than Bob Dole and Trent Lott," Gohmert said. "So they're going to be an indication of where the establishment will go. They have more belief that Trump will make deals with them and that Ted Cruz will continue to stand on principle, as he has been."
-snip-
Gohmert believes the venom in the GOP is a result of Ted Cruz doing something most other politicians don't.
"If you're a person that's interested in lying or you're interested in twisting the truth or you're interested in breaking your promises that you made to get elected, then you're not going to care for Ted Cruz," Gohmert said.

Let's see now:
1. Trump WILL make deals, yes he said so and even more so today he is proud to tell you that.
2. Cruz..will stand on Principles, yes he said so.
Now which of the two have FREEPERS been harping for 8 years now?
Well lookie here this is what has been harped on all these years: "we need someone who will stand on principles and work for us"..Ted CRuz has proven it many times on the Senate floor, he is not afraid of anyone.
Answer #2. Ted Cruz is the one we have been waiting on.....
The vast majority of Trump supporters ACT like they have no idea who Trump is. He has a record. It can be researched.
As does Cruz.
Only one of them is a conservative.
You have to keep in mind this election is not about Conservatism it’s about America and it’s betrayal by all the elites in Washington including the so called Conservatives.
As Ted Cruz does on the Senate side, on the House side of Capitol Hill, one man, Texan Louie Gohmert (TX-1), stands almost alone in holding the Big Government Republican establishment’s feet to the fire and demanding they adhere to conservative policy prescriptions.
Gohmert was a leading figure in the conservative rebellion that led to the resignation of the feckless John Boehner as Speaker of the House – and he was one of the few who stood for conservative principle to oppose the backroom deals that led to the election of Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan as Speaker to replace his mentor John Boehner.
Gohmert introduced H.RES.410 to derail the disastrous Iran nuclear weapons deal and the “Parental Notification and Intervention Act of 2015” to restore the judge-eliminated rights of parental notification and intervention in the case of an unemancipated minor seeking an abortion.
But Gohmert’s real contribution to the future of America isn’t introducing bills; it is shining the light of day on government abuse and establishment Republican perfidy.
There is no Republican who takes to the floor of the House more regularly than Rep. Gohmert does to rally conservative votes or hold the GOP leadership's feet to the fire. From defunding Planned Parenthood, to the IRS targeting of conservatives, to border security and sanctuary cities, more often than not the leading conservative spokesman is Texas Representative Louie Gohmert.

When Trump does two things we will all finally be able to agree that he can’t be a conservative.
A) win an election
B) secure a border
A so called Principled Conservative cannot win.
Trump has a chance precisely because he not an Ideologue, ideology and philosophy have nothing to do with this, it is the anger built up over time by people because they feel betrayed by all of our leaders.
A long stretch to call Dole and Trent conservative. They are not ideological. They are about power, status and non-idelogical factors.
Some will never get it. It’s like your mother absolutely demanding you keep your hands at ten and two on the steering wheel. Yes mom, I know you are right but for the tenth time, THE FREAKIN CAR IS ON FIRE!!!!
This is a good thing as every time the witch appears on television she tanks in the polls.
“A so called Principled Conservative cannot win.”
That sounds familiar for some reason.
I think one could but:
But most principled Conservatives appear to be beholding to the Cheap Labor Express and gloBULL free traders. That is not what we need right now.
That does appear to be the #1 principle.
Trump is famous for being “schlonged” in deals.
So now Gohmert is a liar too. He must be the last outlier to be tarred with the Trumpeter brush.
NR isn't the establishment. They're right wing zealots - scribblers trying to attract the attention of the establishment - big GOP donors and elected politicians who are mainly concerned about looking out for their personal interests. It's clear why the GOP establishment has come out for Trump - Trump's record of political stances ranging from one end of the political spectrum to the other speaks for itself. The man is infinitely flexible in his political beliefs. Now that's a man the GOP establishment can deal with, and in fact prefers, because they can look conservative compared to him.
“Trump has a chance precisely because he not an Ideologue, ideology and philosophy have nothing to do with this, it is the anger built up over time by people because they feel betrayed by all of our leaders.”
That’s what was said about Romney and McCain. See how well that worked out. Trump supporters are hoping for two things. The first is a lot of moderate Dems crossing over. The second is a lot of conservatives once again pulling the lever for the lesser of two evils. Romney was more conservative than Trump and conservatives stayed home because he was too liberal.
The only way Trump wins is with a conservative as VP and he already burned that bridge. That leaves a must win state for VP and that means Kasich.
Which leads me to one conclusion. The media and GOPe has colluded to keep conservatives home. Doesn’t matter if it was Trump or Bush. Same results, but with Trump it makes the destruction of conservatism final and no one is the wiser.
Excellent plan really.
I think most Trumpsters will agree with this Cruzer that we detest the lying GOPe leaders with every fiber of our beings.

If true, that's your PROOF that the Republic we once knew is forever lost and we're doomed to the Fascist/Socialist state that has been erected to rule us.
Not surprising, because there has never been a Republic come into existence that did not commit suicide.
Sadly, you may be right. Another thought I’ve had is what happens if the Dems have a brokered convention? What if it is the PLAN to take out Hillary and Bernie there—and nominate Biden? I’ve not seen a discussion about how a Democrat brokered convention would work, but suddenly putting Biden up against Trump changes everything for the Democrats. They would have their excitement back, with all the media backing, and have a candidate that Obama voters will readily support...Trump becomes just another grumpy old rich guy, not cool anymore, and America, and conservatism loses—again.
