National Review: Publisher ‘Broken Hearted’ Over Subscription Cancellations
Breitbart ^ | January22,2016

Posted on 01/22/2016 6:45:06 PM PST by Hojczyk

Last night, National Review published articles from twenty conservative intellectuals “Against Trump.” This afternoon, publisher Jack Fowler sent this letter to friends of the magazine:

Dear Friend,

Today is a big day for National Review. Our editors have made a very forceful defense of conservatism, of principle, and against the politics of attitude, in our editorial, Against Trump.

We have received angry calls, and cancel my subscription demands. One in particular broke my heart. Well, let’s hope time heals.

None of this was unexpected.

But: We have also received very strong expressions of support from many NR friends. People who believe and they are right to believe this that the main reason National Review exists is to do the very thing it is doing today.

Defending conservative principle. Defending it from being marginalized, or recast as emotion and bluster instead of as an expression of reason and intelligence.

On behalf of Rich Lowry and my colleagues, thank you for standing with us. Or, better, thanks for letting us stand alongside you as we embrace the Buckley mission: To stand athwart history, yelling stop.

Best,

Jack Fowler

Yeah, they had their issues, but they finally did something right.

"They may be out of touch with the Republican base but I doubt they’re out of touch with conservatives."

Probably correct. The base has evolved, I used to consider myself part of it (and active at the precinct level). I'm still active, but fear the party may be evolving into something quite different.

If he wins, Trump will move the GOP to the left, away from social issues, away from small-government philosophy, and toward big-government, government run health-care, more crony capitalism, but be able to do so by underlining lower taxes, reforming and disciplining the bloated bureaucracy, (but not weakening it's "legitimate" purposes) strong opposition to immigration, and retreat from engagement on the international scene (while expanding the military), the latter two of which have become hotter and hotter issues, no one else has tapped into them entirely and certainly not with the same passion.

It is not where I want to go. To quote Rush Limbaugh, "I hope he fails."

That is legendary. Great stuff.

I don’t know what the point was but I love the passion.

"January 2015:

“It depends when. “

trump is still a pro-abort.

Yes he is, but Trump supporters are not big on pro-life. The Party is changing, for better or worse. The Trump supporters are not necessarily pro-abortion or pro-gay marriage, they just see these issues as water under the bridge, things that cannot be changed politically, secondary issues at best. Maybe they are right.

You may consider yourself conservative, but if you support Trump you are clearly clueless about conservatism.

If we posted all the Trump flip flops we’d crash the site. And sometimes he has opposition positions at once.

It was good that they spoke for the MAJORITY of us.

Well, I'm tired of these same people "speaking for me". I'll do my own speaking! They've told us to shut up for far too long. They've made fun of us and called us names (teabaggers). So I'll go with the guy that says no to fake refugees, illegal immigrants and open borders.

Honestly, I think the majority is waiting hours in line, in the cold, to listen to Trump speak......well, if you're going by large numbers, at least.

Oh, dear. One has to be gentle here, but the fact is that if you have to tell anyone you're an intellectual, you're not. And the inherited ownership of a once-great magazine does not confer any honors: those have to be earned. And judging from the names on the banner, they're cadets in a world populated by generals.

Someone said it up-thread: Trump has tapped into the rage. Cruz isn't far behind. Neither man is a fellow likely to appeal to the comfortable inhabitants of the NR boardroom, and everyone else is far behind. What to do?

Well, one thing NOT to do is to piss off the people who would normally disdain Trump as a poseur and Cruz as an amateur but who are now ready to burn the Ten Miles Square to a smoldering stubble. And that's exactly what Buckley's unworthy heirs have done. We are not, as my sainted Dr. Sowell has pointed out, in a position of reason. We've had enough. Feel the rage.

I can see many things being lost. I’m not happy about them, but I can see that they happen.

But if no major party fights for the fundamental right to life, all is lost. That is the beginning of mobocracy. It is tyranny.

Glen Beck may not be an intellectual

But Mark Steyn and Limbaugh surely are and neither of them attended.

I want to know where NRO was when Mitt Romney was running for President..or was Mitt Romney a “Conservative” according to these people. The same Mitt Romney and GOP that banned Sarah Palin from attending the GOP Convention because they thought she would ruin Romney’s chances of becoming President..because hey, Mitt Romney was a glowing Conservative right, never flip flopped every five seconds on the issues. Would have been nice to see NRO fight against John “You don’t have to fear an Obama Presidency” McCain, but I guess he was a glowing Conservative too
