live in Donald Trump country. Maury County, Tenn. — like much of the South — was dominated by the Democratic party until just a few short years ago. Tennessee’s legislature didn’t flip red until 2008, and my own legislative district in my own “conservative†county was blue until 2010. Tennessee didn’t change dramatically between 2004 (when Democrats were in total control of state government) and 2011 (when control flipped to Republicans), but national politics changed. And — as Donald Trump is proving — they can change again. If there is a consistent refrain among former Democrats (and there are lots in the South), it echoes Ronald Reagan: They didn’t leave the Democratic party; the Democratic party left them. That means many things, but it does not mean that they’re small government, constitutional conservatives. It means that while they may have been attitudinally “Tea Party,†they were never on board with the core substance of the movement.

Interesting NR calls the GOPe the "constitutional Right" when they lack the constitution to be right. They have no guiding principles other than open borders, sell out America, and go a bit slower over the cliff than Democrats.
Also, have you noticed there aren't any articles on 'angry Democrats' even though Sanders is about to win a state or two?
No articles about how there's a disconnect between the party and the Democrat base. None.
Venture (and I warn you) over to Democratic Underground. 90% plus of the posters support Bernie. Bernie has gotten more individual contributors than Obama did last time out.
All the focus is on the Republicans.

Actually an interesting read and I agree that there is an ideological divide between “the base” and the establishment.
The Establishment tend to have a less patriotic and more globalist view. That means they love crony capitalism, foreign interventionism, and weak borders to allow more cheap labor into our country.
The Establishment then create political theories to express and actualize their above stated desires...

The GOP ranks have swelled so much that the middle has moved leftward. The reason is the abandonment of the center by the Democratic party.

Yep. And the National Review is part of the GOPe. At least is used to be, I haven’t ventured over to their website in about 10 years. I assume they are only worse now.
I read the thread headline and just shook my head. The GOPe hasn’t even taken the time to find out why we here in drive-by America are so mad at them.
They call us haters, hard-hearted and stubbornly clinging to the Rule of Law. We don’t feel, we don’t care like they do and we are just to frigging stupid to know what is good for us like they do.
Damned right it’s a revolt. And come November next year maybe we can call THEM something - unemployed.
TN had a Republican super majority and did nothing with it to make TN conservative friendly. Pretty sure TN will be the home of the second Islamic caliphate in the US.
And they hVe managed to get the factions to fight amongst themselves instead of stomping the establishmemt

The GOP has ceased to be a conservative party.
If it had acted like one, it wouldn’t be worrying about Trump today.
Since I live in Tennessee, we work hard to get rid of the RINOS that infest the Legislature, Governorship and our 2 US Senators. All RINOS.
Even with RINOS we have cut the sales tax, loosen the strangling gun laws. With a Legislature that is only partly Conservative.
We have 2 pockets of total Dem controlled cities. Memphis and Nashville. Memphis is the most corrupt and highest in crime in the state. Bad schools, financial trouble. Just dumped their black mayor for a white one, same party though. Will be interesting to see who the new Chief of Police is. It’s always been black as has the School Supper. But they gave up their school charter, thinking they’d take over the entire of Shelby Co schools, the small towns in the County, fought back and won the right to run and elect their own schools and boards.
We are an Income Tax free state, sales tax is the revenue source and we finished with a surplus this year.
Another dumb article. The key issues, immigration and bad trade deals, do not fit neatly into the conservative and non-conservative cubbyholes. Until these geniuses factor that into their “analysis”, they will continue to look and sound like idiots.
That’s been Captain Obvious since the day Trump announced.

You may have locally conservative government but the sell outs in DC continue to make life hard for everyone
