After months of responding to Donald Trump's attacks by deflecting them, joking about them or just plain ignoring them, Ted Cruz struck back late Tuesday with a stream of pointed criticism directed at the GOP front-runner.
At events in New Hampshire and in radio interviews, Cruz took direct aim at Trump on several fronts: tying the billionaire to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, questioning his ability to win a general election, casting doubt on his ability to serve as commander in chief and disputing his "New York values."
The swiftness and ferocity of the attacks is striking for Cruz, who said as recently as Monday that he didn't want to go to war with Trump. The two men are battling for the top spot in polls in Iowa, which host the first-in-the-nation caucuses Feb. 1. Cruz said Tuesday that Trump was clearly feeling the pressure.
Cruz took direct aim at Trump's competence. "Does a potential commander in chief know what the nuclear triad is, much less is he or she prepared and able to strengthen it and keep this country safe?" Cruz asked on "The Hugh Hewitt Show." In a Republican debate last month, Trump was asked about the nuclear triad and had trouble with the explanation.
And he jabbed Trump on the billionaire's cosmopolitan lifestyle. âI think he may shift in his new rallies to playing New York, New York, because Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values,â Cruz told Carr.

I know what you are saying.
LOL
Ferocity of attacks ... on Trump’s cosmopolitan lifestyle.
He has “New York values.”
O the huge manatee!!!!
Agreed.
Thats the same thinking that got us McCain Romney etc, I thought we were done with that?
Trump is about as pro life as Hillary
“Trump is a DRAFT DODGER.”
Trump went to military school.
Cruz never even joined the ROTC. Too busy in Debate club.
Those in D.C. are all in the same limo. The uniparty came right out and told America this last night.
I’ve stood next to Cruz having a conversation with a squeefy little Jewish kid (I get to say that, being Jewish)...
Cruz was a really humble, normal, thorough, brilliant, communicative, nice guy. He’s FAR better in person than what you see at public events.
Exactly! This is a revolution and Trump's the only guy getting through enemy lines.
+1
That doesn’t make my statement false.
“He doesn't think Trump will be the nominee” is an attack?
On what planet is that?
Every single candidate in any election thinks they will win it instead of their opponent. Why would anyone run with the intention of losing?
>>Trump couldnât guess that?<<
Not only couldn’t he guess it, but the issue in the debate in question that had been discussed just before he was asked his opinion was on the nuclear triad. If he’d have just been listening, instead of sticking out his jaw and making faces at different parties, he’d have picked up what the triad was from those who had just spoken.
Clearly the man has no chops for policy, which explains why he has been all over the lot on policy his entire adult life, and will likely to continue to “evolve” if he should ever be placed in the presidency.
I expect the Establishment to bolt to the Hillary camp if Cruz is the nominee.
For example, can you ever imagine McConnell or Boner voting for Cruz over Hillary?
Of course not. The Establishment HATES Cruz. He’ll kill them within the party. They will have no seats at the table.
Yep and they would use him to destroy Trump. Then destroy Cruz.
The polls against Clinton have improved for everyone, including Trump:
