After months of responding to Donald Trump's attacks by deflecting them, joking about them or just plain ignoring them, Ted Cruz struck back late Tuesday with a stream of pointed criticism directed at the GOP front-runner.
At events in New Hampshire and in radio interviews, Cruz took direct aim at Trump on several fronts: tying the billionaire to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, questioning his ability to win a general election, casting doubt on his ability to serve as commander in chief and disputing his "New York values."
The swiftness and ferocity of the attacks is striking for Cruz, who said as recently as Monday that he didn't want to go to war with Trump. The two men are battling for the top spot in polls in Iowa, which host the first-in-the-nation caucuses Feb. 1. Cruz said Tuesday that Trump was clearly feeling the pressure.
Cruz took direct aim at Trump's competence. "Does a potential commander in chief know what the nuclear triad is, much less is he or she prepared and able to strengthen it and keep this country safe?" Cruz asked on "The Hugh Hewitt Show." In a Republican debate last month, Trump was asked about the nuclear triad and had trouble with the explanation.
And he jabbed Trump on the billionaire's cosmopolitan lifestyle. âI think he may shift in his new rallies to playing New York, New York, because Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values,â Cruz told Carr.

For the record, I’m a Cruz guy, but I can totally vote from Trump as necessary.
TDS on parade
I would love to see Cruz become president, the only problem is he hasn’t got a snowballs chance in hell of winning against the democrats.
I guess the internal polling was showing some troubles ahead for Cruz with his past approach.
Self fulfilling prophecy.
It could be that this won’t end well for either man. If the two of them manage to knock each other down and usher in Rubio, it’s really going to suck.
“Trump was asked about the nuclear triad and had trouble with the explanation”
Boy, I’m not even running, and I have no real idea, but without googling, I’m would guess that means the three common modes of nuclear weapons delivery: land-based ICBMs, submarine-based ICBMs, and bomber-delivered warheads.
(I just googled it and I was correct, Trump couldn’t guess that?)
Same here.
“suddenly, Hillary Clinton supporters are rushing out to support Donald Trumpâs attacks directed at me. And it starts to make you think, gosh, why are Hillaryâs strongest supporters trying to prop up Donald Trump?” - Cruz
Worse yet, pave the way for a Bush resurgence...
Maybe. Or he let Don get his numbers up early. Because maintaining a level of support is a lot harder than achieving it. Elections are won in the final stretch most often. and the right loves playing candidate hopscotch. History shows it conclusively.
You are so wrong. Rotten would be defeated by any candidate who can articulate why the Democrats spell disaster for America.
I guess I could vote for Cruz if he were the nominee but for for some reason I can’t stand him. But then I’ve put up with turning off the TV whenever Obama comes on for 8 years...
I suspect the GOPe and the rats sees him as the best chance to take out Trump - the one who MUST NOT be POTUS.
i really wish these two could hold on attacking each other until the establishment is dead and buried. they are opening the door for rubio, christie.
I’d vote for either, but wish they would both knock it off with attacks.
The bigger enemy is the left and the establishment which are really the same today. the address by Haley proved that last night.
This has been going on since 6/15/2015. All attempts have failed and will continue on that path.
“I would love to see Cruz become president, the only problem is he hasnât got a snowballs chance in hell of winning against the democrats.”
Check the stock market, Travis.
2016 is 2008 in reverse. There is already an 80% chance that whoever the Republicans nominate will be the next President. It is probably going to be a landslide.
I’ve noticed that as well.
