David Bowie has died after a battle with cancer, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the familyâs privacy during their time of grief," read a statement posted on the artist's official social media accounts.

“Wow thatâs interesting, I was watching a video he released a few weeks ago, Blackstar, and I remember thinking it was about death, it had lyrics mentioning death and angels. Wow brilliant guy, very bizarre song but still he got the message through”

The worship over the Astronauts skull from the video is haunting, ode to Major Tom by David? Space Oddity one of his earliest songs and certainly his first hit
I remember his duet with Bing Crosby....................
Bowie was a huge influence on several British musicians. One in particular, Peter Frampton. According to Frampton, there was a time when Bowie was the most respected rock/pop artist in Europe. Bowie helped to cultivate Frampton and others.
This is definitely one of my favorites! Thanks for posting the link!
Sweet Ride
He said he had done everything... I hope that included reaching out to Christ, asking for God`s mercy.
If he did he missed an opportunity to release a statement of such, how time is short and we all need to turn to Christ etc
I think I saw you
In an ice cream parlor
Drinking milkshakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine
I don’t think you knew you were in this song
It was cold and it rained
So I felt like an actor
And I thought of Ma
And I wanted to go back there
Your face, your race
The way that you talk
I kiss you, you’re beautiful
I want you to walk
We’ve got five years
What a surprise
Five years
Stuck on my eyes
Five years
My brain hurts a lot
Five years
That’s all we’ve got
Yes Major Tom was good, our family had the Ziggy Stardust album, but outside of that, never liked anything else he did.
I concede he had some talent, but he was not a very good example dressing and acting like a queer etc
I was a big fan of Mott The Hoople though, he apparently was a big help to them, wrote one of their biggest hits...ALL THE YOUNG DUDES
in my opinion he had a limited amount of good music and the vast majority was trash
God Bless his soul
MOTT THE HOOPLE
Rebel, rebel........
Bowie himself may not have even known what he was. He said he was gay in the early 70s then declared himself bisexual and then that he had always been heterosexual.
But that he spent the past quarter century married to Iman must mean something pretty straight, huh?
No, it means that men who have sex with men died at a lower age by a decade or two. In his case, a decade and a half maybe. Being heterosexual later in life doesn’t necessarily mitigate all the damage done at an earlier age. Like cigarette smoking in that regard, I suppose.
I’ve heard that song more times than I can count. This is the first time I had any idea what the lyrics were. Thanks.
Lyrics for today:
‘It’s only forever,
Not long at all.’
It was the 70’s. It was all about pushing the envelope, back when there was still an envelope to push.
Do enough crazy stuff and you'll gain a following of someone.
He flirted with homosexuality, or at least the image of being homosexual. That's hardly conservative.
My news app greeted me with a photo that looked like some woman in a cheap wig. Turns out it was David Bowie. I liked “Golden Years”. That was about it.
I’ve yet to read confirmation of a single Bowie homosexual tryst. The only one he’s even rumored to have engaged in was with Mic Jagger. The only evidence to support that it happened is Bowie’s ex-wife (not Jagger’s, as noted above). I certainly wouldn’t blame her for being bitter, but I wouldn’t take everything she says as objective truth.
One thing I’ll note: Bowie had a hard sell (early in his career) persuading his backup band—all hetero—to dress more androgynously for the sake of the act. As a last resort, he said, ‘Just do it this once. If you don’t get more and hotter chicks than ever before in your life, you don’t have to do it again.’
Not praising his morals, heaven knows. But that’s scarcely the argument a homosexual would proffer.
Hell the savages who run Crumpville today want to dig he and the Missus up and move them
This is Memphis today.....Johannesburg
Surrounded by fearful white suburbs
Did not realize the history of Ellis
I remember the character that sang the song for Cheech and Chong's "Earache My Eye" was called "Alice Bowie", which obviously was a combination of Alice Cooper and David Bowie:
My momma talkin' to me tryin' to tell me how to live
But I don't listen to her 'cause my head is like a sieve
My daddy, he disowned me 'cause I wear my sister's clothes
He caught me in the bathroom with a pair of pantyhose
My basketball coach, he done kicked me off the team
For wearin' high-heel sneakers and actin' like a queen
The world's comin' to an end, I don't even care
As long as I can have a limo and my orange hair
And it don't bother me if people think I'm "funny"
'Cause I'm a big rock star and I'm makin' lots of money
money, money, money, money, money, money
Ahhh! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...
I'm so bloody rich! Ha ha ha ha
I own apartment buildings and shopping centers! Ha ha ha ha
And I only know three chords! Ha ha ha ha
