Ted Cruz said during an appearance in Iowa on Monday that thereâs a difference between him and Donald Trump on immigration.
The Texas senator, who is leading the field of Republican presidential candidates in Iowa according to the latest polls, was asked by a man in the state if, like Trump, he believed that all undocumented immigrants should be deported.
Cruz replied, âAbsolutely yes.â
âAnd in fact, look, thereâs a difference,â said Cruz. âHeâs advocated allowing folks to come back in and become citizens. I oppose that.â
Cruz is on a six-day trip around the state to shore up support for his candidacy. He made the remarks during an appearance in Boone. The video of the exchange was uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday. Hereâs a transript of the exchange:
QUESTIONER: Both you and Donald Trump are really strong on immigration, but he supports deporting all the illegal immigrants. Are you willing to say the same?
TED CRUZ: Absolutely, yes. We should enforce the law.
Q: All?
T.C.: We should enforce the law.
Q: Ok.
T.C.: And in fact, look, thereâs a difference. Heâs advocated allowing folks to come back in and become citizens. I oppose that.
Q: So no citizens and all of them?
T.C.: So, if you read I have a very detailed 11-page immigration proposal thatâs on my website itâs TedCruz.org. It was designed with Steve King and Jeff Sessions were the two who sat down with me to prepare it and it is enforce the law across the board.
And there’s simply no way for his supporters to whitewash it or to justify it.
Trump is completely untrustworthy.
Jane, don’t know why this poster keeps citing you in, if I missed something from you, pls let me know.
But, see Jane, these are the “3rd graders” that I ignore— as opposed to Trump supporters who actually engage in legitimate policy discussion ..
Sorry, not buying. It’s all hot air. Between Cruz and Trump only one of has introduced a U. S. Senate amendment to increase immigration via the broken H-1B visa process by 500%. That’s a position he held for over 2 years before withdrawing it for his POTUS run.
http://www.cruz.senate.gov/?p=press_release&id=137
Sen. Cruz’s amendment would:
Immediately increase the H-1B cap by 500 percent from 65,000 to 325,000.
To truly fix our broken immigration system and take into account our nationâs economic needs, we must put more emphasis on increasing employment-based immigration. There is a current shortage of qualified high-skilled workers in the U.S., with an estimated 230,000 advanced-degree STEM jobs going unfilled by 2018.
Additionally, more H-1B workers mean more jobs for American workers â according to a study by the American Enterprise Institute, for every additional 100 H-1B workers, 183 jobs are created for U.S. citizens.
If I offer you less than market value and a reduced benefits package because you know I’ll just hire an illegal or an H1B, then replace you after I make you train your replacement, then you tell me.
Actually I did for a while when I was younger. I saw first hand what greed and market manipulation does to labor markets. Later, I saw what it did to the white collar market.
To claim Cruz has a better policy or is stronger on this issue is foolishness.
***********
If Cruz is going to deport all illegals, and not bring them back, how is that a weaker position than Trump’s?
If you are not getting qualified applicants at the rate you are offering then you have to increase the rate offered. Hiring is not rocket science.
Losing you? You switched from Trump to Cruz? When?
Right. It is preposterous. To further show the differences between Cruz and Trump. Trump knows children born in the United States of illegal immigrants are not US citizens. He has said so and that is correct.
Gotta ping the hyena pack to support you, huh?
LOL, this primary season is going to be tough on you.
Yes I remember it in full context. Perhaps you should check the link and refresh your memory.
27 days to go Catherine when it all starts. You better buck up top face reality.
But yet you took the time to respond to a 3rd grader. Thanks Vin. You made my day.
Again, Steve, - it’s not private if one says it at a public campaign rally-— perhaps you’re trying to convey something else.
As for your point that Trump is stronger than Cruz on immigration— that appears to be the significance of Cruz’s current comment-— if Trump is going to bring back illegals, while Cruz is not— Trump’s position is no longer stronger than Cruz’s- look for Cruz to call it amnesty.
Yes, I did take a moment. From my office, to the coffee machine, it’s amazing what an up dose of caffeine can do for your brain ;)
As far as ‘souring’ on Cruz... After getting bombarded by emails from Cruz, Heidi, their dog, ect I was legitimately angry at his campaign.
With that said I still like Cruz and I believe you can be critical of a candidate even if you like them. For instance I like Donald Trump but I think he’s intellectually lazy.
In the end Cruz and Trump are two sides of the same pro-American coin. If either wins, we win. They are very, very different kinds of people, and I wish Cruz’s intellectualism, and Trump’s charisma were found in one candidate.
Trump led on this issue, took heat as a racist, took on the media and brought it to the forefront. It would not have been this major an issue without him putting it on the front burner for all to see. This has NEVER been a strong issue for Cruz.....well.....until after Trump's success with it, he finally changed his somewhat weak past on it. He changed on H1 visas and from the foolish empathy message he tried to send with Glenn Beck only now when he can see it would help him.
That's a problem for me, and maybe should be for most conservatives.
I have the same problem with Trump's early statement about Pam Geller's drawing contest.
in all fairness, tough talking.
but tough? wow, that’s a leap. I like trump but he hasn’t voted on nor presented an immigration bill.
amazing how POTUS and SCOTUS change their views and actions once elected sometimes.
I hope neither one of them do, whichever gets elected.
Trump announces for President and says we are going to build a wall and everyone says, Hooray!
Then he says we are going to put a great big beautiful door in that wall and let the good ones back, still everyone says, Hooray (sort of).
Then he says we will expedite the return of those we sent out to return, can we get another, Hooray!
Trump is a business man, a negotiator, which is why a lot of people like him.
He knew all along he would try to expedite the return of people who came in illegally.
This is what he does.
He starts out saying “I want 100 million for this Hotel”, all the while knowing he would gladly take 80 million, then brag about what a wonderful deal he has made.
This is who he is. He started with throw them all out and build a wall and ended up at expedite return for illegals.
It is what he has wanted all along. He is negotiating.
This shows a GOPe coordination with Cruz - both talking the same crap. “Surging Ted” is getting desperate.
That deserves it own thread. Nice find.
