How Donald Trump destroyed the Republican Party in 2015
The Washington Post ^ | 12-29-15 | Eugene Robinson

Posted on 12/29/2015 11:16:25 AM PST by Gandalf the Mauve

History will remember 2015 as the year when The Republican Party As We Knew It was destroyed by Donald Trump. An entity called the GOP will survive — but can never be the same.

Am I overstating Trump's impact, given that not a single vote has been cast? Hardly. I'm not sure it's possible to exaggerate how the Trump phenomenon has torn the party apart, revealing a chasm between establishment and base that is far too wide to bridge with stale Reagan-era rhetoric. Can you picture the Trump legions meekly falling in line behind Jeb Bush or Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.)? I can't either.

Trump didn't blow up the party on his own. He had help from a field of presidential contenders that was touted as deep and talented but proved shallow and wanting. Bush raised shock-and-awe money but turns out to lack his father and brother's skill at performing on the national stage; he seems to want to be crowned, not elected. Rubio is like the teacher's pet who speaks eloquently in class but doesn't do his homework. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was slow off the mark, perhaps having been stuck in traffic on the George Washington Bridge.

Who else would be acceptable to the GOP establishment?...

If that’s his legacy, then clear a spot in the history books!

Eugene Robinson is a democrat - has always been a democrat - and only knows the GOP through the eyes of a democrat.

...no one is more upset about this than Eugene and his progressive friends, who've counted on being able to slap milquetoast GOP candidates around for years.

YOU skeeter - totally 'get it'...

And the down side is??????

After the last Party of Stupid episode last week with Ryan giving away the store to the Dems and Obama in the budget bill, the Republican establishment should hang its collective head in shame and retire.

You were given the majority in the House and Senate because you said you could lead. You proved that wrong over and over. Step down and retire while you still have a modicum of dignity left.

Donald Trump did not destroy the Republican party. The leadership of the Republican party did that with their contempt for, and betrayal of, the people who elected them. I hope that with the election of Donald Trump the Republican party will be FIRED, and the party again reflect the wishes of Republican people. I hope that these despicable and treacherous criminals, Republican and Democrat alike, will not only be removed from their offices but face prosecution and conviction for their treasonous acts.

Eugene is dumber than Juan Williams. I do not say that lightly. Juan is rightly ridiculed for his stupidity on FOX, while Eugene’s stupidity on MSNBC is regarded as the wisdom of a learned elder.

Now this would be a happy development and I believe we’re headed toward that outcome. As things are moving now, between Trump and Cruz only a small minority of delegates (selected by voters and caucus goers) to the national convention will be for “establishment” candidates (i.e., all candidates other than Cruz or Trump). The convention can be the starting point for constitutional conservatives to successfully wrest control of the Party from the ‘RAT infiltrators (also known as RINOs) who control it now.

The Washington Post is seeing its worst nightmare develop before its eyes and all their attempts to derail it are failing. Their playbook no longer works.

So, what’s wrong with that? The GOPe doesn’t represent conservatives or our values any longer.

Couldn't agree more. Who cares if the old GOPDNC uniparty commits suicide. It's not like the Tea Party didn't try to warn them in advance about the error of their ways a long time ago. They just chose not to listen.

Clearly, the Grand Old Party is not grand anymore, it is rotten to the core and my response is - good riddance.

Funny that we never saw these kinds of mainstream media stories when the Soros-financed Radical Academic Socialists were tearing apart the Democratic Party in 2000-2006, isn’t it?

“They just chose not to listen.”

Agreed. Then again, it’s probably impossible for them to hear us because DC is an echo chamber. They have been accustomed to telling us how to vote for so long that they forgot they work for us.
