Ted Cruz is going to wake up to an early Christmas gift from the polling elves at Quinnipiac University, as their new results show him making a YUGE leap in popularity to gain on the front-runner Trump. For his part, he increased by one point as well.
Donald Trumpâs perch atop the 2016 presidential polls is looking a little shakier this morning.
In the latest Quinnipiac University national survey released Tuesday, Trump leads Texas Sen. Ted Cruz by just four percentage points.
Trumpâs share remained essentially unchanged from the universityâs last poll, ticking up one point to 28 percent. Cruz, meanwhile, shot up eight percentage points to 24 percent.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio finished third with 12 percent, a five-point drop since late November, while retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson continued his downward spiral with 10 percent, a six-point hit in the same period. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie registered 6 percent, his highest level of support in a telephone poll since late May. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush took 4 percent, while all other candidates earned 2 percent or less and 8 percent remained undecided. Of those who named a candidate, 58 percent of Republican voters said they might change their mind before voting in their stateâs primary.
Cruz commanded pluralities of support over Trump among those describing themselves as members of the tea party (38 percent to 27 percent) and white, born-again Evangelical Christians (33 percent to 22 percent). Cruz also led Trump among very conservative supporters (38 percent to 27 percent), while Trump led at least nominally in every other demographic polled.
But itâs close. Among men, for example, Cruz trails Trump 30 percent to 29 percent, while among those with a college degree, he trails 24 percent to 21 percent.
In other results, it looks like Cruz does best in a head-to-head competition with Hillary, but he finishes even:
“Probably correct, but then youâll have most of the Moderates staying home, and you can forget about the Indy/crossover votes if Cruz is the nominee.”
Okay, so, in the recent polls showing Cruz essentially tied with Clinton, how can Cruz be tied? Where are your moderates coming in on those polls?
Because when Trump eventually throws the "pick-six" that'll irreversibly damage him, the Cruz ground game will be what's left.
When I do my averages, I exclude them...
Trump leads only because of the split among several candidates who need to drop out including Jeb Bush. We need Cruz as the only serious, intelligent, and electable candidate to take the lead. At some point this Trumpoonery-Buffoonery needs to end and given his high negatives, he is losing to Hillary by a whopping 11 points. This Republic simply cannot endure the nightmare of a Hillary win.
If someone other than Trump is the nominee will you vote for him/her or will you let Hillary become president?
Trump, Cruz or lose.
People were very excited about Cruz and rightly so
I have a Cruz 2016 I had made in I think 2013 I put on one of my trucks
Trumps bombast and aggressive tone came along and stole the thunder
But ironically I think Trump paved the way for an ideology candidate like Cruz to triumph more than he would have otherwise
It’s win win either way
The acrimony here is because Trump indeed sucked up a lot of oxygen
But only he in my opinion can get that vaunted coalition cross ideology nuance and race and region and class
Cruz as VP sounds like a good start
He’s still very young for a POTUS candidate
Cruz has a practical plan to deal with illegals. Trump cannot tell us how he plans to identify, locate, detain, and feed, over 12 million illegals from dozens of nations (40% of whom are those who overstayed their visas) and deport them using ships, trains, and buses, and all in the face of what would likely be a tsunami of court injunctions. This pie-in-the-sky stuff is for fools.
These quotes look pretty disgusting. Precisely, what is the lipstick-on-a-pig context that deuglifies these quotes??
Internals: 64% Trump supporters say mind is made up, 63% of Cruz supporters say they can change their minds.
Trump waiting room has moved from Carson to Cruz.
Sen. Cruz would not take the Vice Presidential on a ticket with trump because it would end his political career.
As I've said for months "as long as it's Cruz." Otherwise, I have no interest in kicking Lucy's football, again.
Cruz is a conventional career politician. Now with beltway stink on him. The Dems and the MSM wing of the DNC have the template to take him down all ready to roll out.
It’s a day dream to think the Kardashian generation indy voters will stampede to Cruz in a general election. Not going to happen.
Now that Carson is quickly falling out of favor, many of those voters would logically move to Cruz, as he is the "least establishment" of what is left in the field besides Trump.
What has been very consistent in the race is that the non-establishment candidates have maintained a combined polling of around 60%. Carson used to have a much bigger share of that, as well as Carly Fiorina. As Carson and Fiorina continue to fade, Cruz is the beneficiary.
If someone other than Trump is the nominee will you vote for him/her or will you let Hillary become president?
Wrong question. Far more Cruz supporters have said they won’t vote for a “liberal” like Trump.
If you want to justify your position by “recent polls” knock yourself out.
Bottom line, the things that make Cruz so popular with most Conservatives, make him a certain 2nd place in the general. Think about it.
Trump has demonstrated a hell of a lot more talent for avoiding interceptions than Cruz has shown for avoiding fumbles.
Cruz has never been able to break the media blockade against him. The media just relaxed it to keep Charlie Brown conservatives from siding with Trump, too.
I love it when Cruz and Rubio refer to themselves as “Reagan conservatives”. Both were 11 years old when Reagan was elected and young teenagers when he was in office. Pushing toy trucks on the floor, while Trump had already made a few billion dollars off capitalists ventures made possible by Reagan.
Yeah. About that "electable" part....
If the things that make Cruz so popular with most Conservatives, make him or anyone else a certain 2nd place in the general, we have no hope. Think about it.
