Old Dixie Highway is now officially President Barack Obama Highway within the city limits of Riviera Beach.
For the residents of Riviera Beach, it has been a long time coming.
Mary Brabham has been a resident of Riviera Beach for years. She says the change is welcome.
"It's time to let the past be the past. We are moving forward and do things not for one, but for all."
According to Riviera Beach Mayor Thomas Masters, Old Dixie Highway served as a reminder that this city was once heavily segregated.

Riviera Beach is mostly an appalling slum so Barack Obama highway is a good fit.
You know, that gives me an idea. From here on out, I’m going to name everything I own which requires a name, either “Dixie” or “General Lee”. Every last thing which requires a name or title, and maybe some which don’t. I already have the flag on my license plate (state flag, MS, and Confederate flag, SoCV plate), and I’m going to find a way to incorporate Dixie and the Old South into everything I can.

Riviera Beach has always been known as a craphole. Utterly appropriate.
If you know the area at all you know that the government there has been a collection of sleezeballs since (at least) the ‘60’s. Some of you might remember Tugboat Anne of late and pernicious fame in Riviera Beach.
Oh dear, another part of my past gone. I lived just off Old Dixie back in the 60s.
That road goes for hundreds of miles and is known everywhere as Dixie Hwy or Old Dixie Hwy.
Dixie is a mangling of the French word dix, meaning ten and referring to the 10 southern states. The Land of Dixie is nothing more than the land of the ten southern states, rather like New England.

Today was the first day we saw the “President Barack Obama Highway” signs hanging over the railroad tracks.

Riviera Beach is an interesting black majority enclave of Palm Beach county.
Along the beach barrier island is high rise condos and expensive homes on canals.
On the mainland side is majority poor blacks. And along Dixie Highway there is poor bars and great places to get killed.
Been there. Bought a yacht there and the broker staged it inRiviera Beach. It was not a nice neighborhood, but close to the sea.
