There were “smiling faces†from the crowds exiting the Los Angeles premiere of The Force Awakens on Monday night. Amongst these, presumably, were Disney executives ecstatic that the $4bn they paid George Lucas for franchise rights looks to have been a sound investment.
Initial reactions from all three screening rooms where the film was shown for the first time – as well as from social media – suggest that JJ Abrams has the chops to please both critics and fans, and that The Force Awakens may well recoup at least half the $4bn by itself.
A journalist for the Hollywood Reporter was one of the first to tweet following the event, at which mobile phones were confiscated.

Most of it is Disney hype and marketing. While some pople may be driven to hysteria, most of the “excitement” is generated by Disney. Something Edward Bernays was good at.

They had security tighter than you’d believe for this event. There were no incidents for the premiere. What might happen with the opening night on Friday...we’ll have to wait and see.

My wife took me to a movie today. (I usually watch them at home, a lot cheaper that way without the aggravation of going out.) Anyway, she made an observation that practically all the previews, and top movies out, are full of violence and fighting. However, the media would have you believe that people abhor guns and violence. The media must be wrong, because the multitudes enjoy action, violent drama, explosions and shoot-ups (and the triumph of good over evil), and that makes the big bucks. I think she is on to something, that support of the 2nd Amendment is much stronger than the media would have one believe.
Looking forward to seeing this.
But they have really oversold it.
Better be a great movie, and I hope it is.
I aint watching it till mid Januaray and only in the “cheap seats” when i have a few hours i need to kill.
