ROME â The threat of terrorism must be confronted sensibly and not by restrictions based on religion, which ultimately threaten religious freedom and incite more violence, said Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, chairman of the US bishopsâ Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty.
âAs citizens and as believers, Christians and Catholics in the United States cannot possibly countenanceâ denying people entry into the country due solely to religious affiliation, he told Catholic News Service.
Lori was in Rome for a Dec. 10-12 international conference on Christian persecution in the world, held at the Pontifical Urbanian University.
While the continuing threat of terrorist acts in the West by Islamic State has caused security concerns, restricting religious liberty in countries like the United States, he said, could lead to policies that make matters worse.
The archbishop was asked about the increasing climate of fear in the wake of terrorist attacks, as reflected, for example, in recent remarks by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who called âfor a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our countryâs representatives can figure out what is going onâ and better understand possible threats. Such proposals, the archbishop said, have raised âgreat religious freedom alarms.â
Lori said that although there are growing security concerns and a fear of terrorism, denying entry into a country based solely on religious affiliation may only worsen the situation.
âI think those things have to be addressed in sensible ways,â he said. To address growing security threats, the archbishop stressed that governments must do so in âways that do not, in fact, make this situation worse by inciting more violence.â
Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore is looking for a promotion from Pope Francis or trying to avoid Cardinal Raymond Burke’s fate.
Muslims burned and sacked Rome in their history...
Why is the Vatican so blinded by Satan?
Too many Sodomites in the church.
I am Catholic and do not agree with this archbishop.
Remaining in the Commatholic Church pecking order.
as a bishop, you have no children, no grandchildren.....
so basically, just stay out of our business of protecting our families...
So, what’s up with this Catholic-Muslim connection?
Obie attends a Catholic church. He’s actually a Muslim.
Keith Ellison used to be a Catholic, now he’s a Muslim.
Hmmm...

Pope Francis said war is madness, just over a year ago while condemning the idea of war in Godâs name, and today, in a succinct but notably unforgiving and emotional statement, Francis reiterated his previous warning that a piecemeal World War III has already begun and, as he previously stated, the international community would be justified in using force to stop what he called unjust aggression by Islamic State militants.
Liberals complained about conservative Bishops denying pro-abortion candidates Communion. With Pope Francis at the helm, the Bishops are giving up on that. Now liberals are pushing for the Bishops to call out Republicans who violate Catholic social teaching (i.e. Syrian refuges, climate change).
I choose life.
It totally amazes me how many infidels have a death wish. This guy is nuts. He’ll be one of the first ones to go.
AB Lori should be glad he was not born during the Crusades.
the church shouldnt support the illegals coming to this country
Then the National Catholic Reporter (NCR)will call you a bad Catholic for disobeying Pope Francis. Of course, the NCR was fine with pro-abortion Catholics and Gay Catholics when Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict were at the helm.
Catholic charities are the main recipients of ME refugees and illegals.
I much prefer Sen. Cruz’ proposal for athree year ban on refugees from 30 countries that are hotbeds of terrorism, allowing for humanitarian exceptions for persecuted Christans.
Effectively, it bans muslims by specific nation (easier to enforce), is longer than trump’s suggested 90 day time out, and focuses our efforts where the problem actually exists. There are countries where muslims are not over run by terrorists. As well, doing it by nation has precedent, and is harder to label as “racist,” and does not piss off every ally in the Middle East other than, possibly Israel.
To be fair, the Southern Baptists and the Mormons issued similiar statements regarding Muslim immigrants.
Did I miss something? Have Islamo-Nazis stopped mass killing Christians?
Islam is not a religion. Period
