The Iowa caucuses are seven weeks away. Donald Trump is still the Republican front-runner. Sen. Marco Rubio is, for now, the establishmentâs best (only?) hope. And Sen. Ted Cruz is the guy who looks best positioned to win.
Yes, you heard that right.
Cruz (R-Tex.), as of today, has the most direct route to the Republican presidential nomination â assuming that the past history of GOP nomination fights works as a broad predictor of where the 2016 race is headed.
Let me elaborate.
1. Cruz is positioned as the most conservative candidate in the race. Although Trump gets all the attention for his over-the-top statements, Cruz has staked out a position on the far right on virtually every major hot-button issue, including immigration, Obamacare, national security and the fight against the Islamic State militant group. And, tonally, Cruz comes across as aggressively and unapologetically conservative â a less controversial and more electable version of real estate magnate Trump.

Spot on. and very well said. So many on FR think that being right on the issues is enough. It hasn’t worked so far.
One more thing, I was so enjoying reading all the thoughtful commentary on this thread, a lot of posters name I haven’t seen much, and then, the usual suspects had to come in, and the name calling started. It is really getting old.
I’m Hispanic. I know of NO non-Republican brown folk who are going to support, let alone vote for him. Including most of my Independent relatives who are scattered across the West and Midwest.
Does Goldman Sachs approve? I trust NO ONE who has ANY connection with that gang.......
Think Independents.....
I agree.
Uhhhh....it’s happening right now. You just don’t know it yet.
“You canât see that they want Cruz because they think they can take him out later? You canât see this is a jobbed effort to take down Trump?”
I think you ascribe more intelligence to the MSM than they have. They don’t like conservatives is true. However, Cruz is way more a real conservative than D.T. So, they would never “favor” Cruz and risk him being the nominee. They just don’t have the intelligence to conduct a long range scheme you attribute to them.
Face it, you are just upset because, at least for the moment, Cruz is getting some much deserved attention instead of Mr. Trump. It is about time a consistently conservative candidate - Senator Cruz - got the attention instead of a “conveniently conservative” like Mr. Trump that is liable to change with the political wind.
The WaPo tells us what the GOP will do. I’m chortling.

Surprised to hear that as I regularly talk politics in person with people I know and people I don’t, and mostly they are Mexican Americans and African Americans. All of the Blacks and most of the Mexicans are thrilled at what Trump is saying and excited that he could become president.
They are fighting to survive in this economy. They have been hurt the worst and they see how Trump can help them. They are sick of the divisions and want us to unite as Americans... Us against the world, not us against each other.
Of course, all I’m doing is trading anecdotes with you.
Are you aware that Cruz was private legal counsel for John Boehner, or that he advised GWB on immigration policy? You know, Mr. open borders Bush? Cruz is a phony.
.
I am paid by people that need engineering services.
And all of them see through Trump.
Functional people just do not fall in love with clowns.
Boy f**kin' howdy. I like how y'all say that stuff!
.
Like his own sisters say, Donald is the little boy in this campaign. The little boy that must have what makes him happy.
.
So far Trump, Cruz and Rubio have shown the courage to do so quite well. Huck and Christie have gone there a bit but they are relegated to the side stage. The more we can chip away at the domestic axis of evil - far left, hollywood and media - the better off the country will be.

>> “So many on FR think that being right on the issues is enough. It hasnât worked so far.” <<
Really?
When has it ever failed to work?
You want to elect a weather vane because you’re obsessed with his spoiled brat personna.
.

What a joke!
Are you aware that it was Red Cruz that masterminded the legal victory against the Gore vote stealing machine in 2000 in Florida?
Without Ted Cruz, W would never have made it to the White House.
It was Cruz’ job to provide legal counsel, but it doesn’t mean that his clients were sharp enough to take his advice.
Cruz has been through the election battles at the very top, and that is why he is pushing Trump aside in Iowa. He knows the election ropes.
Your dishonest trolling is going to define you here in the future if you keep it up.
Cuz’ we trust WaPo to tell us the truth, right?
.
Ted, not Red! (oops)
How often does the Republican front runner in Iowa become the Republican candidate? From memory, not often, if at all.
.
WE trust the WAPO panic to show us what scares them.
Unfortunate that you can’t see these things.
