According to the latest Des Moines Register Poll, (full pdf below) of 400 Republican caucus goers, candidate Ted Cruz has surged into the lead with 31% support - a gain of 21 points since DMR's previous polling:

I think the schizophrenic responses must have been set up by the questions asked or the way they were asked.
Iowa isn’t about picking the winner. It is about winnowing the field. One of the top 3 finishers in Iowa will be the nominee. Iowa is about getting rid of the also rans.
But take this poll with a grain of salt. The Register poll leaves a lot to be desired.
Cruz has worked in Congress to build a coalition of house conservatives which successfully frustrated the moderate leadership of the House. He is also much less arrogant and does not personally insult his opponents the way Trump does. So it seems reasonable to me for Iowa voters to think Cruz would work better with Congress than Trump. You certainly won’t help Trump by calling Iowa voters idiots.
“Cruz has exactly 3 friends in senate who back his bills.
He is the least popular senator! Not only that, Cruz is actually despised by majority of republican senators. It is laughable to assume Cruz would get best cooperation from congress.”
Well 3 points, first it makes Cruz’s case that he is not part of the Washington Cartel if you want change it won’t be from a guy whom the establishment likes. THe establishment hated Reagan before he was elected. What makes you think they would cooperate with Trump anymore than Cruz?
Cruz rises in polls, hence the sleazy hit piece in the NYT.
No kidding. If you’re gonna cheat/fudge...don’t make it so obvious ;-)
Two thoughts:
In the past month I have moved from Trump to Cruz. I think a number of people are looking for a true conservative alternative to Trump and Cruz is the only other candidate running smart enough to know this. Ted fits the bill.
Secondly, many here are only following what happens nationally in social media. Cruz has been picking up a lot of endorsements and working the State hard of late. Follow some of the Iowa GOP and media on Twitter and you’ll get a better feel for his ground game.
First you do understand that I have no problem with Cruz having no friends in Senate. Most are RINO’s or democrats.
But when they vote for Ted Cruz as best to get along with congress, that totally and unequivocally destroys any credibility those hand picked 400 voters have.
I never said Trump would get along better with congress than Cruz. Please do not assume. But any half informed US citizen who has paid any attention to votes in congress should have known either Rubio or Bush would have the best chance to get congressional cooperation.
If Cruz doesn’t win Iowa he’s toast.
Someone is "cookin' the poll books"
Liberal rag. Trump said the other night that the register “in his opinion” purposely polls him poorly. The crowd agreed.
He scalded their ass for a minute or so about being dishonest, etc
Thia is there way of trying to get back at him by actually living up to what he said about them.
Trump was right. They are dishonest.

Sure Cruz has to win Iowa, never would argue otherwise.
But what we are seeing with this poll is an electorate that is now focusing hard and Cruz doing well in that environment.
He has played this beautifully using Trump as a giant snowplow to clear the Iowa path for him.
Agree.
This is the Des Moines Register retaliating for what Trump said to the crowd in Des Moines about the Register being a terrible, horrible newspaper.
