A 30-year-old man who has paid off his mortgage in three years has drawn not the admiration but the ire of the Internet.
Sean Cooper, a financial writer and pension analyst, worked three jobs and lived the life of a cheapskate for years while paying down the $255,000 mortgage on his $425,000 bungalow in Toronto, Canada.
Cooper was emotionally scarred after seeing his single mom almost lose their childhood home after she became unemployed in the aftermath of the dotcom crash in the early 2000s.
'I didn't want to be in that situation. I saw how tough it was on her,' he told CBC News.
Cooper had managed to save up $170,000 by working a long list of student jobs while in college and living at home (he claims he paid his mom $600 a month in rent).
Not too long after graduating, he put the downpayment down on the three-bedroom bungalow with basement apartment.
Determined not to be burdened with a mortgage like his mom, he worked his full time daytime job of being a pension analyst, and at nights he burned the midnight oil writing for financial outlets.
But that wasn't all. The staunch vegetarian also took a $13-an-hour job in the meat section of a local supermarket.
'It wasn't the most glamorous job but it helped me pay off my mortgage, so I can't complain,' he told CBC.

I hope he’s mature to know that haters are always gonna hate, and envious people will always feel a loss when someone else gains. In short; screw ‘em!
I wish I had that kind of diligence and self-control. Not only do I applaud him for the impressive effort to get out of debt, but also to have been able to land a $400k house even with the mortgage at that age.
My wife’s parents bought a 110 acre farm in 1947, built a house on it and paid it off in 5 years.
He thinks he paid for it by hard work and self-denial, but it was really White Privilege.
He is taking jobs from others.
He has no life.
His success implies makes my 30 year 11% ARM is not a good deal.
He is living the Canadian dream.
What not to hate about the guy?
The crabs in the boiling pot want to make sure none of the other crabs escape.
Good for him. He is probably already living debt free or with limited debt, which means he is probably better financially prepared for that ultimate SHTF sunrise.
Jealousy.
Same reason we build up heroes and then squeal with glee when we tear them down.
Now that his house is paid for, he should use his financial discipline to build up a healthy nest egg.
You forgot to mention, he does not indulge in excess consumption, so he’s not doing his part to “help the economy”.

Is that a minor SHTF and not a major one? Because a major SHing TF would render all your debt meaningless; in a sense, if you are in debt, S better HTF and a major one at that.
My congratulations to Sean Cooper. It took me many years of buying and selling houses to achieve what he has at age 30.
I did most of it by buying, rehabbing and selling. Usually three steps forward and two back. Recessions, wrong decisions on neighborhoods and a little piss poor luck, but I finally achieved it. Just about the same time my brother paid off his VA mortgage he took out in 1969.
Just put an eagle plaque above the door. Then, you can boast more subtlety.
No way man, he should lease a Ferrari and use payday loans for the payments :-)
Part of it is the drawing of attention to yourself. What he did was admirable as far as paying off his debts and taking responsibility. But why brag about it? It’s similar to people who lose a lot of weight, or run a marathon and then won’t shut up about it. Or, my personal favorite, someone who donates a ton of money to a good cause and then gets tons of publicity and wants people to suck his you know what.
I guess I like humble people. Anonymous donors, etc.
