New Quinnipiac National Poll: Trump Firmly in the Lead, Rubio Second with 17%, Cruz Third With 16%

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio continue to surge in the polls. According to the latest national poll from Quinnipiac, Cruz has surged to third place with 16%. That's the highest score ever for the Republican senator from Texas.

Rubio too is doing better than ever before: he's now in second place with 17%. This means that Cruz and Rubio are effectively tied and both gunning for the important 20% threshold.

Ben Carson also polls 16%. This means he's tied with Cruz and virtually tied with Rubio. The difference, though, is that this is absolutely bad news for the retired neurosurgeon. Not too long ago, Carson was tied with Donald Trump for first place. While Rubio and Cruz are on their way up, the good doctor is now on his way down. The longer this downfall continues, the more likely it becomes that he may drop out before the Iowa caucuses even take place.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump continues to lead the field nationally. He is supported by 27% of Republican and Republican-leaning voters. Although that's certainly good news for the billionaire businessman, he too has reason to worry about the rise of Cruz and Rubio:

POLL RESULTS

The main problem for Trump is that Cruz is surging among Tea Party voters, "very conservative" voters, and evangelicals. These are exactly the kind of voters a candidate needs to win in Iowa. Trump is still doing relatively well among these members of the conservative base, but his numbers aren't improving, whereas Cruz's are.

I’ve seen large numbers of Marco Rubio TV ads but, at most, a handful of Ted Cruz ads so that may help explain why the despicable Rubio is slightly ahead of Cruz.

Of course I’ve also seen HUGE numbers of Yeb Bush TV ads but that hasn’t seemed to have helped him. That’s likely because Yeb is already widely known as the “It’s an Act of Love Kid”.

Early times yet, but interesting still the same.
It's actually GOOD to have a REAL race between candidates.

It's almost true that ANYONE would be better than that smirking, simpering, phony-a** wife of the former POTUS. He, aka President Sleaze-bucket, was/is/will always will be a lot smarter than his smirking, simpering, phony-a** wife.

Am I being harsh?

Rubio is the GOPE’s only hope now. The money this guy is about to get is going to be staggering.

Jeb is out after Iowa. I think his last shot is showing donors that he can rig an election as good as Democrats can. If he wins, it, that’s what’ll have happened.

If it came as a vote between Rubio and Clinton...bite my tongue!

Not so fast...look for Christie to be given another push by the GOP. They are looking at his “stronger numbers” in NH.

I stand in support of a dedicated American who tells the truth, exaggerates nothing and is relentless in constitutional adherence and the pursuit of justice.

The genuine people's candidate:

Just saying.

Trump is firmly in the lead. And he has spent less than any other candidate in the race, on advertising.

The least. Period.

If he ever has to advertise, his advertising budget is almost unlimited.

Perhaps we have our champion already.

Just curious...does anybody know how long the longest running 1st place candidate was in that position through a primary season? Not that it means anything, but we’ve been hearing for months that Trump would be out by the end of summer...by the fall...by the winter, etc., etc. For all intents and purposes he’s practically lead since he announced. I don’t recall a recent race where a candidate lead gate to gate.

Maybe, but I doubt it. Rubio’s at 17 percent. Definitely shouting distance of Trump. Once they figure out how to hobble or kill Trump, he’ll be there to take up the slack.

People have spoken on Bush, he’s done. Nothing will fix the brand, or erase the ‘Elect me president of North Mexico’ talk.

Once Trump starts spending $$$ on ads showing Rubio’s support of amnesty, Rubio’s numbers will plummet.

On the other end, the zeroes:
Gilmore
Pataki
Linda
Santorum

And also:
Huckabee 1
Christie 2
Kasich 2
Paul 2
FioRino 3
Yeb 5

These candidates are like the American Idol contestants who don’t know they can’t sing.

Trump is the Simon Cowell of candidates here.

Oh yes, you’re correct, I was not inferring that Rubio is done, just that they will keep pushing any and all candidates as “surging” in order to minimize Trump. And yes, Rubio probably has a better chance. However, I’m not sure they will figure out how to hobble Trump. I think the latest strategy, and probably the most effective, is to simply ignore his candidacy and say they will not vote for him.

“Rubio is the GOPE’s only hope now”..........

he got his training while selling swamp land in Florida and used cars before that. We definitely DO NOT need Rubio.

Oh, Hillary would be much more preferable than a GOPe candidate.

Always remember, the GOPe has done more to set back conservatism than any other institution. The GOPe’s biggest enemy is not liberalism, Obama, or the Democratic party. The GOPe’s biggest enemy is true conservatism.

The GOPe is going to sabotage Trump or Ted Cruz if they are the nominee. So, why in the world would conservatives support a GOPe candidate like Rubio, Christie, or Bush???

A Democrat in the White House would be easier to battle than a GOPe’er.

At this point, they’re arriving at the political fact that he’s too smart to take himself out. If they had the goods on him, they’d have used it by now.

As such, its going to take a physical threat, or an assassination. Unlike a lot of politicians, Trump is unique. Rarely has that much money, that much skill with communications, and an electorate who is convinced the two-party system has failed happened at the same time. He can’t be bought or bullied.

He’s the one guy you could whack and the blowback is worth it because even Cruz off the bench doesn’t have what Trump has. Cruz HAS to take money from people to win. Trump doesn’t. CNN is likely considering very seriously paying the $5M if that’s what it takes.

If Trump DOESN’T do the debate, and the numbers do fall, then there are so many losers that can’t afford to lose that standoff.

The internals vs Trump that the D’s have are likely petrifying, and the R’s don’t want it either, outside Jeff Sessions, and likely just Jeff Sessions.

Somebody from an ethnic group will be hired to take him out and the reason is because of Trump’s racism. The press will jump on and say, “It’s sad, but you reap what you sew.”

Then it will be like the last scene in Chinatown, and conservatives will end up being carried off by Hollis Mulwray and we’ll end up with Bush or Christie. Like Christie, since Bush can’t undo his “I’m running for the presidency of North Mexico rhetoric.”

Someone is going to either attempt, or succeed, at killing Donald Trump. I think both parties are that scared of him.

If this was confined to what may be claimed a normal presidential primary election year
then one could reasonably categorize things using history. But apparently Trump has brought
into the mix a group that normally isn't that participatory in primary elections. If this holds
then we may have results favoring Trump where one would think he'd not do very well. Example
would be the Iowa caucuses.
