McDonald runs towards one police cruiser while brandishing a knife, a 2nd cruiser rolls up, cop steps out walks towards McDonald and proceeds to shoot him 16 times.

Maybe he felt threatened, maybe not; however, interpretation of edged weapon defense training may be an issue.
Article: “However widespread that contaminated interpretation may be, it is NOT accurate. A suspect with a knife within 21 feet of an officer is POTENTIALLY a deadly threat. He does warrant getting your gun out and ready. But he cannot be considered an actual threat justifying deadly force until he takes the first overt action in furtherance of intention—like starting to rush or lunge toward the officer with intent to do harm. Even then there may be factors besides distance that influence a force decision.”
The deceased had a weapon and apparently did not heed police officer commands to stop.
And once that five second cycle is done, he’s back up and running.
Cop paused long enough to possibly decide to finish the guy off.
Watching the whole thing I could see how tensions mounted as the cops drove a considerable distance at high speed and risk to get there, adrenalin pumping on arrival.
You back that claim up.
NO department would risk the massive liability inevitable from training “once you start shooting don’t stop until you’re empty”.
This video is prime example of why the trained rule is “shoot to stop”.
“Shoot to kill” leads to exactly this scenario, a la “he’s stopped attacking but still breathing, keep shooting until he’s dead” with prison time for the shooter.
It’s a scene where fear is king.
Thanks for the illustrative illustration!
Now in general, consider a thought experiment where the race roles are reversed
Try this one: An everyday citizen (no badge, no union, no adoring FR fans) does this because he feels "threatened".
There have been spotty cases in which the “civilian” claim to a justifying fear did prevail against even officials. But the bias of standards is quite clear.
Plus...cops have the legal authority to use deadly force. This guy had a weapon, slashed a tire on a cop car. He was not following orders to stop...but, the overkill is a problem. Gonna be an interesting case.
Mercy!
If he was white, we wouldn’t be having this conversation... the media would cover it up.
Truly, I agree, CNN was just stumping this story for effect. But how many White Cops are we going to see getting shot in the streets after this? This is just going to steam roll for the next few weeks sadly. Pray for the cops out there!
It’s sad that a 17yo young man’s life went down that road, high on PCP and walking around with a knife.
Whether or not the officer was justified in the shooting, I don’t know. It’s just an all-around sad video to watch.
There are some 17-year-olds who are a menace to society, and they deserve no sympathy. But I know nothing about this particular 17yo. Did he have a criminal record?
Laquan you be DRT !
Can’t agree on this one, This looks like murder or at least manslaughter, way over the top , he was not running at the police. I was 100% behind Officer Wilson and some of the others, but this is bad, should be charged with at least manslaughter. I think the bigger thing to watch was there a coverup, rumors have been out that some video was erased and other things. Rahm, going to have to show his political skills on this one. Notice another case of all Democratic run city.
He was high on pcp. My bet is he had at least 8 arrests.
So a cop "belives" a suspect may be on PCP so they can start blazing away?
