Your room name is hurting people.
According to a recent student op ed, a bro-dude calling a room in his house a âman caveâ is not just obnoxious but truly harmful to women and a âdisgusting patriarchal myth.â
âWhile I think itâs perfectly acceptable, and even healthy, to have separate spaces where one can enjoy time alone, the gendered language around âman caveâ is pretty gross,â Kalani Ruidas writes in a piece for Golden Gate Xpress, San Francisco State Universityâs official student newspaper.
Lest you think that what a dude decides to call a room in his own house isnât hurting anyone, Ruidas wants you to know that the idea of a âman caveâ amounts to a âpassive dig at femininityâ â yes, the very idea of femininity! â because itâs like saying that âwomen are such a burden that theyâre restricted from that zone.â
(Of course, some people might think that some rooms are called âman cavesâ just because theyâre filled with traditionally âman-likeâ things. However, intelligent people know that this could not be the case because gender roles obviously do not exist.)
âTheyâre the makings of a shrine to big business that has man-cavers nostalgic for a time when they were happy . . . guys should get over the feudalistic idea of a man cave allowing them to be the âlord of their manorâ in a room they can call their own,â Ruidas explains in her piece, which is titled âMan Caves Perpetuate Patriarchy.â
In addition to perpetuating patriarchy, Ruidas argues, âman cavesâ can also make racism worse . . . because âa man cave is a place where a man devolves into a grunting subhuman that leaves sexist and racist comments on message boards

I have a tiny basement in a house packed full of stuff that isn’t mine.
There is the big building of useless stuff I carved a little room in but the electricity was cut years ago. I had an electrician look at it and for what it would cost to bring that old place up to code, it wasn’t worth it.
I’ll get a generator when I look to crank up operations there.
Wahhhhhhhh!
What a bunch of crybabies. They are not happy, so they make sure no one else is either!
Not if you are a man. Especially a white, Christian, straight, conservative man.
I remember one of my first interviews out of college years ago (won't say how many). The guy told me bluntly that he didn't like to hire college kids because they had ego problems. I don't know what his reaction would have been to all this.
I’m a woman and the term doesn’t offend me, what offends me is a bunch of whining ninnies that think they can speak for all of us women. Just go stuff it—you gaggle nincompoops!!!
Say it anyway.
Add “and GFYourself” to the end of it, too.
Me Og. leave Og in peace
Yeah, I always thought the term “man cave” was created in order to denigrate men and an attempt by feminist man-haters to try and put men in their place.
This idiot obviously wets the bed on a regular basis.
if man-cave is bad, I’d hate to hear what they think if I say I’m off to my woman cave.

Why don’t they just make their own rooms called “harpy nests”?
In fact, we could steer the thread in that direction, out of pure spite. What's on the wall of *your* "man cave"?
Reminds me of a bumper sticker on my father's camper: "Gas, grass, or a--; nobody rides for free."
Girls are yucky. Tree houses must also be offensive.
Actually, I agree.
WhyTF should men be relegated to the bowels of the domicile? The man is the king of the castle...I don’t think too many kings hang out in the dungeon.
I always thought the term was ironic & tongue-in-cheek in the first place.
Er.... chained women, usually. :P
Article about man caves being offensive is another reason for having a man cave.
May I tell the feminists idiots that we wives are extremely happy to have their husbands retreat to their “man caves”? It’s a respite for both of us. Too much togetherness is not good for a marriage. It creates stress for both trying to agree on everything. Even Jesus “went apart for while”.
"I rest my case, Your Honor."
