TURKISH warplanes have shot down a Russian jet which they claim flew into the country's airspace. The aircraft was shot down after it was warned 10 times in five minutes to leave Turkish airspace, a Turkish military official has said.
It was just over the Syrian border in Turkey when it was downed by F16 Fighting Falcon jets belonging to Turkey, the official added.
But Russian President Vladimir Putin said the plane was 4km into Syria and had not violated Turkey's airspace as it flew at an altitude of 6,000 metres - and claimed it was shot down from the ground not the air.
NATO has announced it will be holding an extraordinary session at 4pm GMT after Turkey requested it following the incident.

18 posts on something that may be equivalent to assassination of franz ferdinand? Good grief.
This could be WWIII, “really”, not just the, “don’t you know or see that we’ve been in WWIII for a long time?”
This is a serious incident, and trigger-happy, macho, angry dictators like Putin are very dangerous now.
WORLD.....HELL.....LARGE HANDBASKET
I hope Putin ends Turkey.
Turkey threatened last month to do exactly what they just did.

Not a chance. Putin and Russia are not prepared to engage in a general war. Putin will make trouble and change the subject to something else which will distract everyone from a need to respond to this incident.
Definitely an act that justified turkey acting in self defense and starting WW3? Russia clearly going after Turkey here?
Putin may now make sure that SYRIA enjoys the same right to self defense when Turkish forces or their terrorist IS mercenaries attack into Syria
Erdogan opened up a can of whoop ass and now expects NATO to join the party

Turkish Prime Minister Defends Decision To Shoot Down Russian Jet
Last updated (GMT/UTC): 24.11.2015 13:49
Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has defended Turkey’s shooting down of a Russian fighter jet at the border with Syria, saying Ankara has the right “to take all kinds of measures” against border violations according to international law.
Davutoglu said on November 24 that Turkey will not hesitate to take all steps to protect the country’s security, calling it Turkey’s “national duty.” He stressed that the action did not amount to an aggression against any foreign territory.
Moscow says the plane that was downed never strayed from Syrian territory.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the rebel group that says it has the body of one of the Russian pilots who ejected from the downed plane says rebels are conducting search operations in the area to find the second crew member.
Jahed Ahmad of the 10th Brigade in the Coast, a group affiliated with the Free Syrian Army, said his group would consider exchanging the body of the Russian pilot they are holding with prisoners held by the Syrian government.
The incident threatened to increase international tension over war-torn Syria, where Russia is a major backer of President Bashar al-Assad’s government and NATO member Turkey is one of its most vocal critics.

If the choice is Putin or Erdogan or Putin or obama...I'd trust Putin.
i dont care if the Russian jet was in Turkey airspace while is was killing terrorists!
If I were Putin I would be bombing the hell out of Turkey as we speak!
NATO wont be doing shit. NATO is nothing more than a excuse to get American taxpayers to pay trillions to defend Europe, so they dont have to and can spend their money instead on social programs!
Russia is no longer a paper bear. We better hope not.
Keep in mind that Turkey does not respect Syria’s borders, as they have been supporting various groups operating there, including the Turkmen rebels dancing over the Russian’s body chanting Allah Akbar. Turkey also does not protect its own borders against all the hordes that pass through Turkey and get shunted along to Greece and on into Europe. Nor does Turkey prevent ISIS recruits from passing into and then out of Turkey on the way to Syria. So to me it rings a little hollow for Turkey to get so excited over a Russian jet passing over a tiny sliver of Turkish territory. Is Russia the only foreign air force operating over Syria that actually has the permission of the Syrian government?
Russian weapons on the way to the KURDS pronto!
Underestimate Russia at my own risk.
Why would you not consider Erdogan as the loose cannon here? Where do you think IS is finding safe haven? Where do you think IS is sending its plundered oil to be sold? We have a NATO ally aiding and abetting the world’s worst terrorist organizations and calling on us to defend them?
Sorry if my righteous indignation meter is broken
Thank heaven we have a Nobel Peace Prize winner at the helm now, I'm sure he'll steer a calm and steady course through these rough waters. Right?
That's about right. And then after we spend trillions over there, we still spend trillions over here on our own do-nothing social programs. Then throw in the U.N. as a cherry on top. A very rancid cherry.
No wonder our national debt is now into fourteen (14) figures. People are calling Donald Trump super rich because he has 10 billion dollars. But you would have to multiply that 1800 times to get close to our national debt. I don't think people can even imagine that much money - and all of it is taxpayer money that has been flushed down the toilet by our politicians.
Oooooh good news if any
The scum bags are trying to make an exchange of prisoners held in Syria ( ie Russian held) for the body of a Russian pilot
Putin should have a very interesting response
History:
Caucasus Campaign
Russo-Ottoman Wars
The Caucasus Campaign comprised armed conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire, later including Azerbaijan, Armenia, the Central Caspian Dictatorship and the British Empire as part of the Middle Eastern theatre during World War I. The Caucasus Campaign extended from the South Caucasus to the Armenian Highlands region, reaching as far as Trabzon, Bitlis, Mush and Van. The land warfare was accompanied by the Russian navy in the Black Sea Region of the Ottoman Empire.
On February 23, 1917, the Russian advance was halted following the Russian Revolution, and later the disintegrated Russian Caucasus Army was replaced by the forces of the newly established Armenian state, comprised from the previous Armenian volunteer units and irregular units. During 1918 the region also saw the establishment of the Central Caspian Dictatorship, the Republic of Mountainous Armenia and an Allied force named Dunsterforce which was composed of elite[citation needed] troops drawn from the Mesopotamian and Western Fronts. The Ottoman Empire and German Empire had a hot conflict at Batumi with the arrival of the German Caucasus Expedition whose prime aim was to secure oil supplies.
On March 3, 1918, the campaign terminated between the Ottoman Empire and Russia with the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and on June 4, 1918, the Ottoman Empire signed the Treaty of Batum with Armenia. However, the armed conflicts continued as Ottoman Empire was still engaged with the Central Caspian Dictatorship, Republic of Mountainous Armenia and Dunsterforce of the British Empire until the Armistice of Mudros was signed on October 30, 1918.
