Democrat John Bel Edwards won the runoff election for Louisiana governor Saturday, defeating the once-heavy favorite, Republican David Vitter, and handing the Democrats their first statewide victory since 2008.
Edwards, a state lawmaker, will take over the office from term-limited Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal in January.
Voters' rejection of Vitter was a stunning turn of events for the U.S. senator, who has been a political powerhouse in the state for years and started his campaign nearly two years ago as the race's front-runner.

“...supposed conservatives who sell out for it to have cost Vitter the election.”
You would be surprised at the number of elected Republicans who supported Edwards.
That’s right, people just can’t discern the truth. Thy are too uninformed for self-government.
There were no statewide races that Democrats ran unopposed in. All statewide offices are currently GOP, except now for the Governor. And for your information, Edwards isn’t conservative in any way, shape, or form. He will tax and spend, fund abortion, go after home schoolers, and will align himself with the gun-grabbers.
All the suburban East Baton Rouge voters are fleeing to Livingston and Ascension Parishes. EBR schools are sh!tholes.
there was no evil involved
Secretary of State Tom Schedler, who survived a primary challenge from a candidate backed by George Soros, keeps an up-to-date voter list on the Internet. One can look up any LIVING voter if he knows his month and day of birth or his zip code. And it has to be the legal first name, not nicknames. Once one dies, his name is deleted from the current list usually within a day or two of his death. There are no DEAD VOTERS on Louisiana rolls. Fraud would be someone voting in place of a voter who stays home, but I don’t see how that can be done on a mass scale. Maybe it can.
Livingston went for Vitter by a small margin, but Ascension, for Edwards.
You also forgot to mention that Edwards and Mayor Mitch Landrieu oppose the continuation of Confederate monuments.
I strongly suspect that, in true Democrat fashion, he will go after their guns as some point in time also. Along with the other things that are near and dear to Democrats. The big lie is, “I [He] is a Conservative Democrat. A Conservative Democrat is like a moderate muslim. They don’t exist. Expect Edwards to show his true Democrat colors at the first opportunity. You won’t be disappointed. He will faithfully carry out all orders he gets from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D.C. as well as from the Democratic National Committee. Now the Edwards supporters will be able to live a little higher on the hog.
I believe Vitter lost his own Jefferson Parish in a narrow vote where the sheriff was an Edwards booster.
Ascension has a large labor union population that work in the petrochemical industries on the Mississippi River. I own some property in that parish, inherited from my Mother who grew up there. My Father was from the area, too. Have lots of kinfolk there.
Huge tax increases on gasoline and income, and sales taxes will be on the agenda for a Spring special session of the Legislature, guaranteed.
Nominate a thing like Vitter, what do you expect?
Was he really the best GOP-LA could do? If so, that’s a big problem.
So do they wind up with a similar situation in 2016 where the best candidate gets lost in the crowd?
Lincoln Parish went for Edwards, but Jackson Parish (blue collar) went for Vitter. Lincoln is heavily infested with deadheads that have jobs at Louisiana Tech University and Grambling State. Typical government employees that only are concerned with their retirement and medical bennies.
Vitter won statewide twice, in 2004 and 2010, even with all the baggage. What do you know about his voting record? Nothing, I’ll wager.
He had one of the best Senate voting records of all.
“Not surprising considering Vitter’s personal challenges.”
Yeah, we kinda got what we deserved on this one.
This is where you need a strong state party that can step in and manage the process - Vitter brought such awful baggage they should have found a way to get him out of the race in favor of an electable alternative.
Vitter won statewide in 2004 and 2010, baggage and all. That’s pretty “electable,” looks to me like.
I can’t believe the conservatives who fell for the lie.
Edward’s already has the excuses printed up for why he’ll move left now that he has power.
It’s unlikely either of the other 2 Republicans would have won, it wasn’t the whore thing (the story is years old, everyone knew already when Vitter was easily reelected and they new it in June when he had a huge lead in this race), it was Jindal’s unpopularity.
The other 2 are traitors anyway, one endorsed the rat, the other practically did, Vitter was the only actual Republican that ran.
