Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

Trump didn't say anything about any registry of American citizens. He was speaking about the wall. "Would you do that?" (reporter, trying to go back to registry) Trump: "Oh, absolutely. You have to keep them out" (speaking about building the wall.)
Ted should have FIRST said, "You know better, Trump didn't say any such thing. But I am not in favor of registries of American citizens, but ISIS are not American citizens."
Trump never said there should be a Muslim registry:

Cruz above all people should know that the media lies. If you don't know what Trump said, your answer should be "I didn't hear what Donald said. I can only respond what my policy would be . . . ."
Cruz continues to show his “Lawyer” side. He can memorize rules and regulations, but seems to be short on Common Sense. I’m sure he still adheres to the idea of Free Trade being good for America regardless of the track record in front of him of us losing on all fronts!
You're right, it will hurt neither of them.
Eff the MSM - feed them all to ISIS.
Cruz took the bait.
So much for “smartest guy in the room.”
lol now the media is misquoting Trump AND those who comment on Trumps comments!
The media just wont give up!
lol
GO TRUMP GO CRUZ
Personally I think Cruz handled the question beautifully.
If it had been me though, I’d have asked the reporter for a precise quote of Trump’s before commenting.
Cruz just sucks. He’s a nobody in the polls and he’s a fool on this subject. Go Trump
no you took the bait, the media is skewing what Cruz said and it worked apparently on you.
Where did Cruz say he did? The press said Trump said it. Cruz answered appropriately and refused to rise to further bait.
Big difference! Obama IS a Muslim!
Maybe you should worry more about the ones already put in place by the resident Ted.
Trump doesn’t want to register all Muslims in America...it’s a media smear.
I completely disagree with Trump on this. If we can put people on a list just because they are Muslim what prevents the government from creating other lists?
Why not just monitor ALL immigrants, refugees and those who come to our country?
Risk factors can be added on this list.
IE if you are a Muslim then your risk is +1.
If you are from Iran/Iraq/Syria +2
A fervent Muslim +1
Constantly contact/visit volatile regions +5
During the first 5 years ALL immigrants are monitored somehow. Those with the lowest risk may be dropped. ect...
I’m just thinking “outloud” here, but a list with respect to only muslims (and not those claiming to be Christians from syria/Iraq/Iran) seems very very poor.
One of his biggest problems.
Ok, I guess we are ships passing in the night. I do think it’s Cruz’s job to not take the bait of “differing” from Trump. But I can see that maybe he didn’t have time, or maybe like Trump, he was answering a slightly different question.
I can’t stand Cruz. I don’t want him really to be Trump’s VP.
and yes, it's his job to say "I agree with Trump's view" or "I disagree with Trump's view" to KNOW TRUMP'S VIEW.
Cruz said neither. He never agreed that Trump said it.
For being an author you certainly read excatly what the press wants you to exactly the way they want you to.
Again, Did you think and say that when Trump was accused of not defending Obama being called a muslim?
