Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

Cruz didn’t actually say anything about Trump. The MSM strikes again.
yeah, Cruz is too smart to fall for this ... trust but verify when asked ANYTHING by the MSM (or anyone else)
Effing spell correction! “Just call it a jihadist sympathizer registry”..
Why am I not surprised. Some of you Trump supporters have lost all sense of objectivity.
........................................................
Some of you Cruz supporters think he is the brightest light in the Universe. A lot of us were formerly Cruz supporters until he made some DRASTIC errors that showed his neophyte weaknesses. We switched to someone who holds the aces in what counts at this period of time, the ECONOMY. Cruz is for Free Trade and jobs for foreigners. Trump is for FAIR TRADE and jobs for AMERICANS. First things First.
“Cruz should have checked Truth or Fiction before stepping in it.”
Yeah, isn’t it strange how at every turn of the road, the MSM tries to create misinformation when it comes to Trump, and yet, Trump drives right by the “bump” they’ve created and up he goes in the polls again.
“Or that he doesn’t like registries?”
There is an implication there and it should to be cleared up.
Trump should know better than to accept some stupid reporter’s premise and say that we should require all Muslims to sign up in a national registry, an insanely stupid concept.
Hell Trump was a Hillary backer...
You can’t stand your second and he sucks?
Okay then.
Yes Cruz should know better. It gets all of us from time to time. You would think we would test it first. I won’t hold it against either candidate. I hold it against the media.
Do me a favor Molly.
Find somebody who believes Cruz is "the brightest light in the Universe", and post that nonsense to them.
Spare me the strawman fallacy.
Thanks.
Thanks!
This will not hurt Trump.
In the Texas Tribune article, Cruz is quoted as saying “I’m a big fan of Donald Trump”. So let’s ask you— did you read the article. And, that being asked— did Cruz actually even say that? LOL- see how it works?
I don’t want the collateral damage created by this fraud against Trump to extend to Cruz. Cruz has probably dodged it- but... maybe not. I hate the f’n media- scum sucking lowlife queers, queens and a lot in between, who do not work at anything but lies.
Yes, Trump did say it. It’s another example of Trump being really “green” on social/domestic issues and him showing a lack of understanding of the Constitution.
Yet the reporter went on to ask Trump directly, once again, about a database for Muslims, and Trump did not dismiss the idea.
Instead, when asked how to do it, Trump said: âIt would be just good management.â
Asked if those running it would have to go to mosques, he said: âDifferent places. You sign them up ⦠but itâs all about management.â
We need to turn it around and ask if Obama has a database on conservative. On the Tea Party. On Christians. On pro-lifers. Etc. In fact his administration has target some of these groups for various reasons. He supporters special interest groups who label them as terrorists. His administration has dragged some of them into court. He wants to seek out Christians who believe the Bible about marriage and abortion and then swipe their tax exempt status and label them in a database as “haters.”
“I’m a big fan of Donald Trump’s, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens,” Cruz told reporters ....
How is that skewing what Cruz said, which was criticizing something that Trump DID NOT say?
The thrust of this thread is that Cruz should know better than anyone not to be baited by the MSM, as he obviously was in this instance.
Social issues and national security issues are far more important for a candidate to be correct on. If those are handled right, then the economic issues work themselves out. Whether you elect Cruz or Trump, either one will have almost no discernibly different effect on the economy.
There is almost no difference between Trump and Cruz on trade and immigration. The only difference is Trump will let current illegals come back and be legal citizens while Cruz has consistently ruled out ever giving them citizenship.
Wrong, Trump was baited by the MSM on a Muslim registry and took the bait. He said going to different places and having good management would be used to sign up Muslims into a registry.
LOLOL!!!
Yeah! Let's all dance when the MSM pulls the strings. Not!
Funny how Cruz supporters don’t mind trashing Trump. Cruz has made some very serious errors and his supporters refuse to acknowledge them. When he backtracks and makes excuses, that is also excused. See your man for what he is....Ill Equipped for the immediate problems at hand in the country.
