The Paris terrorist attacks seem likely to compel President Barack Obama to consider military escalation against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. But that probably will not mean dramatic moves like launching a U.S. or international ground offensive or accelerating aerial bombing in hopes of eliminating the global threat of violent extremism.

They might have been contained if, around the time of the Patriot Act, the US had gone KGB on the families, villages, and relatives of the early terrorists. Terrorism is an idea and can only be stopped by making the consequences of its expression so rapid, devastating, and ruthless that any notion of performing a terrorist act dies in the mind.
But the cancer has metastasized, spreading far way from its sources. It’s too late for an easier solution. And the worst possible avenue is to let them migrate in their millions into western countries. That is embracing the asp.
