The world was still different in 2008.
McCain could have won. Especially after choosing Palin.
McCain and his camp tanked, it seemed deliberate.
By 2012 the world had changed and Romney was a fossil and he is Mormon.
Even in the best of times it would be hard for a Mormon to win the Presidency.

Right, because electing the next another clown in line from the DC Circus has done so well for the American people for the last 27 years.

It was all downhill for Jack Kemp after that. By 1994 he was championing illegal immigrants and fighting Californians who were trying to pass Prop 187.
Jack Kemp morphed into Jeb Bush.

I don't understand why people would think Carson could. Probably because they have bothered to study Carson and learn about him rather then welding their mind shut while they mindlessly fan girl for "their" candidate.

"Doomed" Trump,Carson Are "Not Electable"
If they say it enough, they think it might come true.
Trouble is, both Kondracke and Barnes are a part of the inside-the-beltway crowd who have no clue what is going on in fly-over America.

I quite agree, every four years the establishment from either party drives us farther away from our freedoms.
Trump is the only candidate who has policies that resonate with the people. Cruz does too, but is less electable than Trump (ref to polls).
The beltway boys are pure establishment and will never say anything that will not lead to an establishment candidate.
But this time, a non-establishment candidate is what is required.

Barnes and Kondracke are distant voices from the past. Once respected TV commentators, now relegated to the dust bin of losers.

They said the same thing about Reagan. That worked well for them too.

Mike Barnicle asked, âJack Kemp works for governor Reagan briefly, gets elected to Congress from Buffalo. A tough thing. Sure - it was a tough thing for the beloved former QB of the Buffalo Bills to be elected in Buffalo.

They said the same thing about Reagan. That worked well for them too.If Carson has the same as smarts as Reagan, he knows where to find the best knowledgeable experts on just about everything.
The black activist thing... not too promising.

What does “electable” mean?
Can anyone give me an objective definition of the term?

The world was still different in 2008. I agree.
McCain could have won. Especially after choosing Palin. I don't see it that way, but let me qualify that.
McCain was a political untouchable. It was over as soon as he had the delegates sewn up. Until he named Palin, he had no chance whatsoever, but I still don't think she could do all the heavy lifting by herself, and he wasn't helping.
He would essentially sit there and let her rally Conservatives. He'd go yeah unhuh "what she said" and that was about it. And then he pulled the audacity of an endorsement of Obama out of his..., well..., where ever, and they were toast.
McCain and his camp tanked, it seemed deliberate. I just think McCain is that stupid. Perhaps he did know what he was doing, but it sure wasn't happening for his team, or the nation. It was the first time in my life I left the presidential slot unsellected.
By 2012 the world had changed and Romney was a fossil and he is Mormon. Even in the best of times it would be hard for a Mormon to win the Presidency.
If a Mormon were hawking good policies, he could win just like anyone else. > IMO
Romney wasn't. Over and over again he was hawking Obama... Romneycare vs Obamacare, letting illegals stay... ug. One more GOPe dupe down the (democ)rathole.

What does "electable" mean? A person who proposes national policies publicly that the U. S. voter buys into from the start, or can be convinced to buy into based on the idea they are the best policies going forward.
One could add in the theory of "Fanboi" into the mix. This person would like the candidate based on personality vs policy. Some try to make the case this plays into Trump in a major way. The trouble is, Trump's policies are top notch.
Another factor plays into the "Fanboi" premise. Here it is. Do I really care what causes a person to back someone who supports my agenda? Ah... NO! Get the guy in and let him implement the Conservatives Agenda. If some "Fanboi" support enables that, I couldn't care freaking less.

This is where your home grown poll team takes over.
You can determine what support and movement is taking place.
You can find out what members of other parties other than your own are thinking of your presentations, or at least if they are considering you or already buying in.
They can hone it down to individual policies and what the best way to present them is.
I believe at some point Trump may have to nicely explain why he thinks Carson is the wrong guy based on policy.
Knowing how people fix on one candidate and then turn off listening, I don’t know how effective that will be.
Polls could tell you.
Polls are a good tool, if used properly and not gamed for advantage.
A good polling firm can be a real asset.
