and they were lucky to get into the series?? another barn burner statement...”lucky” teams don’t win a five game series when they are facing Grienke and Kershaw in four of those games...

if the Mets were “lucky” how bad are the Chicago Cubs???

They didn’t lose the game with the leadoff walk. They lost the game when Collins second guessed himself and let Harvey start the 9th. This is what the bench coach is for. To level set the manager.

I don’t care if you are Tom Seaver, Dwight Gooden or any star met pitcher. With a two run lead in the 9th of game 5, knowing a loss sends you home, if I have a fresh relief pitcher in the bull pen, I go with him. Ego be damned.

Terry Collins lost this series with the poorest managing I have ever seen. Yost picked him apart. Leaving Cespedes in to bat? Leaving Harvey in? Allowing guys to stay in the line-up batting below .100? What gives?

Royals earned and spanked them ever though both team played sloppy.

Maybe in the 12th, but in the 9th inning that simply isn’t true. The Royals scored two runs on one hit — and Hosmer’s double was that hit. Hosmer moved to third on a groundout and scored on another one.

I know hindsight is 20/20, but the events that unfolded would certainly suggest that the Mets would have been better off with their closer starting the 9th. Collins obviously knew something, which is why he initially wanted to lift Harvey.

I don’t think sitting hurts a team like the Mets. It actually works to their advantage because it allowed them to go into the Series with their starting rotation lined up exactly as they wanted.

Not to take anything away from the Royals, but I doubt what Madison Baumgartner did last year has any precedent or will soon be repeated. Do you?

Yes and no.

Orel Herscheiser of the 1988 Dodgers comes to mind, a generation ago.

The Mets were not suddenly hit or lucky at all. What happened with them in the playoffs is that they faced two teams whose approach at the plate — free-swinging power hitters — put them at a huge disadvantage against the Mets’ dominant starters. The Royals were a completely different team at the plate, and they were able to manufacture runs in a way that the Dodgers and Cubs could not. It’s really ironic that the Mets matched up well against two NL teams that played AL-type baseball, then lost to an AL team that played NL-type baseball.

i can’t agree with that...Familia had really not been pitching all that well in the series- he gave up the home run in the 9th inning of game 1 which tied it up for the Royals among other things...

Harvey had been pitching well, had a low pitch count and had not gotten into any jams...he didn’t even look tired...

I can’t blame Terry for putting Harvey on the mound in the 9th but I do believe he made a mistake letting Cespides finish the at bat on basically one leg..

That was an amazing performance in 1988. He went 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA. Two shutouts in five starts, and he came in for a save in the NLCS, too. He was also 3-for-3 at the plate in the World Series, with an RBI and a run scored.

and factor in, as i’ve posted several times, on a good day the Mets are a mediocre defensive team and the past two games were not good days...the Mets pitchers did struggle with pitch location which they did not in the prior series or for most of the season..

I can understand your thought process in advance of the 9th inning, but the events as they played out clearly didn’t reflect that. Harvey walked the leadoff batter (a terrible way to start an inning with a 2-0 lead), then gave up a long double. Even if the ball wasn’t played well, he still got hit hard on that one. Familia pitched just fine.

Even Tommy Lasorda said that the Dodgers did not belong on the same field with Oakland.

Not even close. Herscheiser only won two games. Baumgartner dominated three, pitching five scoreless innings on two days' rest in game 7.

It was more than that. I think Oakland expected to win the series easily and mailed it in. I think Hershiser was the only Dodger pitcher to really dominate the Oakland lineup. The Dodgers out scored the A’s 11-2 in his two starts, but the teams were pretty evenly matched in the other three games. The Kirk Gibson home run to win Game 1 was devastating.
