Ben Carson has edged out fellow GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump in a new national poll, taking the top spot from the real estate mogul for the first time in months.
Carson is supported by 26 percent of GOP primary voters, followed by Trump at 22 percent, according to the CBS News/New York Times poll released early Tuesday. All other candidates follow in the single digits, with Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) at 8 percent and businesswoman Carly Fiorina and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 7 percent each.
The poll represents growing momentum for Carson, who surpassed Trump in several polls in the early voting state of Iowa over the past week ahead of the next GOP debate on Wednesday.
"Ben Carson is now doing well," Trump acknowledged on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" after the poll came out, adding that he believed Carson would see more scrutiny as a front-runner.

I respect Statistical Science.
But statistics is like a scalpel.
In the hands of a seasoned surgeon, it can save many lives.
In the hands of a guy off the street, it can hurt.
In the hands of a political hack, it can cause massive destruction.
I’m a Trump supporter who voted for George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004, and I was not offended by Trump’s comments.
My biggest issue with W. was his post 9/11 actions.
Allowing the Saudis to fly back home with a day or two of the attacks, while the rest of the people in America weren’t even allowed to take a Piper Cub aloft....
Calling Islam a “Religion of Peace”.....
Allowing huge numbers of muslim “immigrants” to re-settle in America.....
Cranking up the police state apparatus via the newly-created Department of Homeland Security and TSA while leaving our southern border wide open, and pushing amnesty, along with that arrogant “See you at the signing” comment.
>>Trumps supporters still believe GWB did a good job after 9/11, they may have been offended at his statements.<<
I doubt it, but anyone who hadn’t really settled on a GOP candidate yet certainly should have been, and probably was.
Any previous Trump supporters here who changed your mind as a result of his Bush not keeping us safe comment? Anyone?
I think what’s happening is that the anti-Bush/anti-Trump crowd (yes, Trump supporters, that crowd does exist and it’s YUUGE by the way) are somewhat indifferent to whether Rubio or Cruz or Fiorina or Carson emerge from the pack. When one does, as Carson currently is, some change their previous preference and go with the one emerging.
After all, if neither Bush nor Trump get the nomination, that’s eventually what’s got to happen, i.e., voters have to find another candidate to concentrate on primarily. (pun not intended, but hey, it works.)
It is true that crowd sizes do not equate to votes,
however when the crowd size is 1000 times larger than the opponents, it DOES mean something.
Another reason the media is promoting Carson, he will much easier to take down later than Trump. Rush just agreed with me 30 seconds ago!
Very cogent philosophical statement!
“Any previous Trump supporters here who changed your mind as a result of his Bush not keeping us safe comment? Anyone?”
No, that statement did not change my mind, I am still a Trump supporter and was a Bush supporter, GW not JEB.
However you look at it, the worst terrorist action in this country happened on 9/11 and I have always believed that if there had been coordination between intelligence agencies it could have been prevented. GW did however, handle it well, better I believe than anyone else would have.
The problem is, there may be more of them (and their allies) than you. The further problem is that trump may be manufacturing them.
I believe the American people would love a President with a strong moral character who is respectful, thoughtful, decisive and a little bit humble.
Im sure lots of stupid people on the right think that to only then act surprised when the left keeps winning.
But they will keep on backing losers because of sentimentality like that.
........................................................They are surely losers for backing Carson who has ZERO qualifications to run this country.
LOL....I thought that same thing, over the last couple of days ;-)
Agreed and it is sad that there are voters who only want to hear Carson or anyone quote a few scriptures and then will vote for that person.
I don’t think Carson has staying power, but there are now five Iowa polls where Trump is losing to Carson and now we have a national poll reflecting a polling decline of Trump’s support. I know we have less than 100 days to go until Iowa, but it’s still early and I’ve seen the lead fluctuate in the last election at one point Herman Cain was the front runner, there’s still plenty of time for some shakeups and surprises - I don’t think Trump is guaranteed the nomination yet.
Interesting. But all Carson could do in Florida is give the race to Rubio.
But Trump carries a gun. Does Carson? I doubt it. I trust Trump on the issue.
Does Carson carry a gun? Not sure....but, I doubt it, considering Carson threw the poor Popeye’s cashier under the bus, during a hold up. Yep....Carson told the gunman to go after the Popeye’s employee and not him.
Meanwhile, Trump - on his way to a concert in Manhattan - witnessed an assault. He had his driver stop the car, PERSONALLY ran over to the guy pummeling another guy with a bat, and grabbed the bat. The assaulter recognized Trump and stopped...and, quickly ran off!
I like Trump’s courage, over Carson’s quivering.
On the day their poll came out, this came out: Poll: Trump leads Carson by 14 points nationwide!!!
And assuming these are mostly Perot voters doesn't mean they stayed home because of Romney. Indeed, the Perot people might not have voted for any Republican. But I'm going to read further.
You could be right...
Carsons appeal is only to those who want to hear scripture while they ignore all of his failings.
I’m sure there’s outliers, I’m not ready to say Trump is finished based on one poll. But, it doesn’t shock me that there is a national poll that is now reflecting what’s happening in Iowa. Iowa is unique because it’s the only state that has attack ads running on Trump’s view on the tax rate, flip flopping on healthcare and his advocating for eminent domain practices. I think a decline may also be tied to his campaign style of constantly attacking GOP candidates, (I don’t mind him shredding Bush and Rubio) making comments about Iowa voters and then coming out and saying that the Benghazi hearings were “very partisan.” Trumps campaign is tied to these polls if he’s up in The majority of them then he will point to the inevitability factor, if he starts slipping he can’t use that tactic and it will be interesting to see how he runs this campaign.
Very good, almost. Let’s make it better:
Polls according to many:
If I like the results = legit
If I hate the results = not legit
If I am a statistical scientist = all results are not legit
.............................................................
How about, “I don’t care what the polls say, I am not influenced because I THINK FOR MYSELF.”
I think you’d better move back to Texas!
