Microsoft Is Still Driving Some Windows 7 Users Crazy With Nagging Ads To Upgrade

If you're running Windows 7 on a machine capable of using Windows 10, chances are you getting swamped with ads from Microsoft telling you to upgrade.

Last month, Microsoft said it accidentally tried to make Windows 7 and 8 machines automatically upgrade to Windows 10 and said it fixed its mistake.

But some people on Twitter are complaining that even from Microsoft's latest upgrade this month, they are being plagued by nagging upgrade notices that take over their whole screen with no obvious way to turn them off.

If you like your Windows 7 PC the way it is and don't want to upgrade, that doesn't make Microsoft's nagging go away.

Installed Windows 10 when it came out. Have really gotten used to it and like it. But, starting this past Friday, blue screen appears with "Critical Process Died". Apparently, Microsoft and manufacturers haven't gotten together to fix the problem. Microsoft says: Can't help ya! HP says: can't help ya!

Might have to revert back to Windows 7 and, as I understand it, could lose a lot of info. Plus, it's a time consuming process. What to do?

My daughter tried to upgrade her machine from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and got a message that her system was not compatible with Windows 10. Has not stopped the nagging.

I upgraded my wife’s laptop to Windows 10 and it is 1000% better than the Windows 8 that was there.

*************************************************************************

I also went from 8 to 10. No problems yet. I hated 8 from the get go and figured 10 couldn’t be worse. It was fairly easy to opt out of the data reporting to Microsoft B.S. - That is if they are telling the truth that they really do allow you to opt out.

I paid to have all that Windows 10 stuff ripped out or uninstalled the very next day

I hope you didn't pay too much. There is an option on your computer to revert to Windows 7 within 30 days of switching to Windows 10.

I was just working on a computer for my uncle yesterday and decided to try the upgrade. When it ground his computer to almost a halt, I reverted it back to Windows 7. It took about 45 minutes to run, but when it completed, everything was reverted back and the computer was humming again.

You have an almost infinite number of websites to choose from nowadays, with quite a few being conservative. Good News! You no longer have to endure we “inepts” any longer from this point on. You have been set free to roam where no “inept” FR blogger could possibly think of going, let alone blogging. You are blessed.

I get the occasional pop-up and they have a new one out, but hey, how often can you actually control something in Microsoft by one simple click! quite nice, actually.

I agree. I don't see ANY reason for anybody to stay on Windows 8. Windows 10 is way better. And, chances are, if you are on Windows 8 you have the hardware (64bit, enough RAM, correct drivers, etc) to install Windows 10 pretty painlessly.

I do understand people not switching from Windows 7 though. The upgrade seems a lot harder when dealing with older hardware that is "less than spec" when it comes to memory and speed.

"My windows 7 machine at work gets this message once every other week. I click the x and go on with my life."

That has been my experience also once every week or two a pop up from the tray and I click it away, I never see any other ads, I think because of all the spying MS does they probably know I will shoot them if they harass me.

Every time there is a change, anti MS, diaper babies show up on free republic wailing and gnashing.

Your "adultness" is dripping. There are some of us who are waiting to understand the risks associated with W10 - specifically, the data mining risks. We can't afford the liability of allowing Microsoft to hold our data, and our customers' data, in their infernal cloud.

FR is not a tech-only website. So the false-dichotomy makes no sense.

And it is merely an annoyance for those of us that actually use Windows, and have taken the time to learn things (a huge feat in this nation these days) to have to constantly wade through the same cliches on every MS post of the same apparently proud tech illiterate people, that turns it into a contest as to who can exaggerate the most solvable issue they have, how few hours they spent on Windows whatever before they switched to a different OS, and who has the oldest version of Windows on the oldest computer.

Proudly running my Timex-Sinclair 1000 without the taint of Windows since...forever.

Taking your post to heart, I shall never mention this again, no matter how smug I feel.

This AM I got a warning similar to: “GWXUX has stopped working”. I researched it and found it was a notification Microsoft automatically installed to collect data and see of my machine is W10 capable. This is apparently installed with auto update KB3035583.

I found instructions to disable this feature.

Go to “Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Task Scheduler”.

In Task Scheduler go to “Task Scheduler Library/Microsoft/Windows/Setup/gwx”. Disable the two tasks listed under gwx (right-click/left-click “Disable”).

The gwx icon will not appear next time you start Windows.”

I find this scary.

I’m perfectly happy with my W7 64 bit machine that’s less than a year old. It does everything I want, no problems, quite fast, it’s never crashed, never lost data and it’s very user friendly once customized to work like XP.

I can think of no reason for going to W10. None! I don’t care what the Windows junkies say about “old” systems.

Windows 7 Pro. By the time I can’t avoid 10 I will be on Linux all the way. I am not tech savvy, even a little, so it is a tedious process but I am getting it done. Most of my web stuff is Linux now. I am just trying to figure out how to transfer my bookmarks to my Linux box without copying them one by one. Is there a way to put one’s address book on a thumb drive all by itself?

Yes.

On Firefox, open up your bookmarks list, and click on "Show all bookmarks."

From there, click on "Import and Export" and export you bookmarks to a file.

Copy the file wherever you want and then you can import them (using basically the same procedure)

"Great idea. That way you can avoid getting patches for any security vulnerabilities, and give your data to some hacker rather than Microsoft."

Once or twice a week, I look to see what upgrades are ready and install all but the four mentioned.
