Republicans are consistently attacked whenever they mention reforms to entrenched entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare. But presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson is going boldly where no Republican has gone before: declaring he would abolish Medicare completely. As Politico reports, Carson would eliminate the program that provides health care to 49 million senior citizens, as well as Medicaid, and replace it with a system of cradle-to-grave savings accounts which would be funded with $2,000 a year in government contributions.
When pressed on his position in May by CNBCs John Harwood, Carson said Americans would support the elimination of Medicare when presented with the facts of his plan. When people are able to see how much more freedom they will have, and how much more flexibility they will have, and how much more choice they would have, I think its going to be a no-brainer, he said. Not surprisingly, Politico says GOP strategists and conservative health care wonks scratching their heads. This isnt a borderline issue. The politics of this are horrific, said Doug Holtz-Eakin, head of the American Action Forum and health care adviser to Sen. John McCains 2008 presidential campaign.
Do we really care what an advisor on McCains failed 2008 campaign says? Maybe the fact that Ben Carson is actually a medical professional means he might have an understanding about how the industry works? And havent these establishment types noticed Ben Carson doesnt really care about politics? Which is why perhaps hes leading the GOP field in Iowa according to the latest Quinnipiac poll?

If he doesn’t move away from this position it will sink him. I’d guess that half of his support is on either social security, medicare, or both.

“...and Carson has just made Medicare an issue that ALL Pubs WILL have to address one way or the other.”
Well he was a REGISTERED DEMOCRAT only a year ago. Perhaps he’s a plant to help Hillary, by making ALL REPUBLICANS look like nutcases.
If he’s not, he’s sure doing a good job at it anyway.
Yep.... he could start by giving back all the money I've paid in for the past 40 years, lump sum, tax free, in inflation adjusted dollars. Then I'll go buy insurance if I want it.
Or we can simply die and solve their problem. It’s going to happen anyway, so why not a little sooner?
NT
Amen!
Would that $2,000 a year be put aside for medical care when one turns 65? Because if they contribute for 45 years, that's only $90,000 for insurance when one is retired. Don't know how that could work, since some people would need next to none of it while some others would go through it in a few years. What happens when it runs out? Do they let people die?
Like a lot of what Dr. Carson says, I'm not sure the details work out real well. A better answer would be a plan which has people seeking inexpensive alternatives to standard medical care.
He may get your vote for talking like that. But not a whole lot of others.
I thought he became an Independent 15-20 years ago and hadn’t been a Democrat since the ‘80’s (or earlier) ??
Wow.
I was interested until he spoke in Ferguson. I knew right then, he would not get my vote. This is just icing on the cake that I won’t be eating.
“But you do know that they are not paid the billed amount by the third party just like you did not pay the billed amount.”
Several years ago, when I was unemployed, I bought catastrophic care insurance. (That type of policy is illegal under Obamacare. But the Bronze plan that would have cost me $8,000 per year with no drug benefit and $10,000 required out of pocket was essentially the same as my old $1,200 total cost catastrophic care policy.) Amazingly, I actually used the catastrophic care policy. I spent 20 minutes in the operating room and never got checked into the hospital. The bill was $16,000; for a hernia repair. But since I had insurance they got an immediate $4,000 “curtesy reduction” I would not have qualified for as a self-pay. The company negotiated it down to $8,000 of which I paid $2,500. That amount, $2,500 was what I thought the whole thing should have cost. But then, we pay for all the illegal aliens who don’t even have to give their name. They would have turned it over to a collections agent if I hadn’t had insurance.
Go Trump!!!
Ummm. What about people already on it and retired?
Carson needs to sink....remember when Paul Ryan said that as Romney's V.P. that didn't go well at all and there are other things about Carson I don't like:
Discussing how Germany and World History would have been altered if the Jews were armed in the 30’s in Germany...
Closing down the VA...
He was also a liberal, just like Reagan and Trump, but doesn't want anyone to know about it...
Spending money like a drunken sailor...
Not wanting to go into Iraq and Afghanistan but it's ok to take on ISIS...
He is a pacifist...
Wants Farrakhan in charge of Public Policy in Chicago...
Thinks it's immoral to deport illegal immigrants, and wants them to have amnesty...
Says he has a lot in common with Al Sharpton...
Didn't do abortions, but knew doctors that he sent people to have them done...
These are just a few of the things I don't like about him...
Yes B.F.A.C., we do, my apologies for not adding his name in with the Dr.!
Thats like expecting a mechanic to run a car company.
