Trump Doubles Down On Bush 9/11 Remarks: "They Did Know It Was Coming"

On Tuesday’s “New Day” on CNN, Republican presidential front-runner defended his response aimed at his GOP opponent former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL), who had claimed in a debate earlier this month that the country was kept safe under former President George W. Bush.

Cut me a break. Just months into GWB's presidency he was supposed to shut down ALL air travel in the US indefinitely because some analyst added "might fly planes into buildings or things" to his long list of possible ideas that terrorists might someday come up with?

I'm sure that would have gone over really great with the public, the media, Congress, and the entire world.

Since Trump knew that airplane attacks on the twin towers, pentagon and white house/congress were coming and didn’t tell anyone, then he is at fault for the 3,000 dead. And the survivors and next of kin should sue him as being an ‘aider and abettor’ in the attacks.

His position on terrorism and an inevitable attack were published!

How about enhanced airport security? Maybe profile Arab men a bit?

To say he could have done nothing is ludicrous.

And not one of those warnings alluded to hijacking planes and flying them into buildings. The MO for al-Qaeda up until then had been suicide bombings on the ground.

The DNC and DU might as well just go on hiatus. Trump’s carrying their water!

I couldn't agree more. They're applauding his words.

Here’s a problem as I see it. Trump (although I know his supporters will disagree) isn’t always the most articulate speaker. I know he can be inspiring and positive with words, that’s not what I mean. Sometime he’ll say something awkwardly and conclusions are drawn about what he really thinks. Today he clarifies his original statement about Bush not keeping us safe. He distinguishes the fact of 9/11 from the blame of Bush. But, in so doing, he opens another mess. It SOUNDS as if he’s heading into truther territory.

You nailed it. I too don't think he is going Truther, but the way he describes the problem it's as if he's a Truther said it.

Trump does need to be more articulate.

“There are millions of immigrants in this country and the government has no idea where they are or what they’re up to. I think this is at the heart of Trump’s statements. If effective immigration controls had been in place maybe the 911 terrorists would have been deterred from roaming around the country and making their nefarious plans. We’ll never really know for sure, but we shouldn’t have made it so easy for them to operate.”

Exactly Trump’s point. I think along with torquing ¿Yeb’s? drawers, he’s showing us that the anointed GoPee “office holder, W” was asleep at the switch at the minimum, and a protector of the “FAT FREDDIES” in Saudi Arabia.

Upon investigation he will be proven to be correct and the dirty laundry will be dealt with before the general.

A lot of people’s eyes have been opened since then, about the Bushes and Republicans in general.

Nonsense. This was stuff of conspiracy theories that would have been ridiculed here and assumed to be Democrat propaganda or something that came from a Michael Moore movie just a few months ago. The only reason it gets any support now is because most Trumpsters will believe or echo anything he says.

It's starting to become difficult to tell the difference between Trumpsters and paulbots. If Trump started babbling about water fluoridation and chemtrails I am believe a sizable chunk of Trumpsters would find a way to excuse or support said comments.

Such warnings crop up on intelligence reports continuously and most turn out to be in error. It is very difficult to determine, when hearing a thousand little bells ringing, which is the one that signals something important. It gets much easier after the fact to point at the right bell, as you Michael Moore and Donald Trump are doing.

Has Trump pointed out that a lot of the hijackers had FL driver’s licenses issued during Jeb’s term as governor? I’d say that is a legitimate issue given Jeb’s pushing of Amnesty, and his pro-illegal alien stance.

Bush wasn't president when Trump made this statement in 2000. No one said the government had no efforts to stop terrorism. There was little to no information to help prevent this event. As we all know, but some are choosing to forget, is that there were tidbits of information strewn across agencies but not shared. There was no inter-departmentental efforts in place to tie together a warning in one area about a guy flying planes in Minnesota flight schools who didn't care about landing with a warning that might come through the CIA about terror suspects and planes. The government was set up to not communicate internally. This is not GWB's fault. While I dislike the concept of Homeland Security as we have now, the grouping of all these agencies was the correct thing to do and is a credit to that administration to realize what was wrong and to solve it quickly. To put one person in charge over the FBI, CIA and other agencies, to breakdown the communication walls and to create new chain of responsibility. Of course, now it's a mess as government agencies tend to do, but the core of the terror focus looks to largely remain in place.

What too many here are forgetting is this is the equivalent of the warning: A crime is inevitable in your hometown. It could happen somewhere and sometime in the next six months. If you don't stop it, it's your fault. That's the new thinking here on Freerepublic.

I am frankly disgusted with the lack of depth in the new thinking among some all of a sudden. I've been pretty excited about what Trump is accomplishing, but this is a turn for the worse. His initial statement is fine. Now, he's bordering on sounding like Michael Moore.

And not one of those warnings alluded to hijacking planes and flying them into buildings.

Except the FBI actually received information and a warning about groups of islamic men trying to learn how to fly but not how to land-- which got nowhere. Even the Chicoms were imagining scenarios of airplanes being used as weapons to attack the United States via groups like Al-Qaeda a year or two years before hand, and there had been Islamic hostage taking of airplanes in the past.

Doesn't take a lot of imagination to predict something like that is coming, or to AT LEAST begin enforcing immigration law to keep shady people with fake Visa applications out of the country.

I heard that there were many abnormalities with the visas held by the terrorists. No specifics, where they expired?

I have never bought the official line on 9/11, nor have I bought the conspiracy theory BS. The truth is somewhere in the middle and these sorts of tragedies always go back to gross incompetence on the part of TPTB.

Bush dropped the ball before he picked it up and spiked it in Iraq.
