George W. Bush unleashes on Ted Cruz
Politico ^ | 10/19/15 | ELI STOKOLS

Inside a sleek Denver condominium, George W. Bush let a hundred donors to his brother’s campaign in on a secret. Of all the rival Republican candidates, there is one who gets under the former president’s skin, who he views as perhaps Jeb Bush’s most serious rival for the party’s nomination.

It isn’t Donald Trump, whose withering insults have sought to make Jeb pay a political price for his brother’s presidency. It also isn’t Marco Rubio, Jeb’s former understudy who now poses a serious threat to his establishment support.

It’s George W. Bush’s former employee — Ted Cruz.

“I just don’t like the guy,” Bush said Sunday night, according to conversations with more than half a dozen donors who attended the event.

One donor in the room said the former president had been offering mostly anodyne accounts of how the Bush family network views the current campaign and charming off-the-cuff jokes, until he launched into Cruz.

“I was like, ‘Holy shit, did he just say that?’” the donor said. “I remember looking around and seeing that other people were also looking around surprised.”

“The tenor of what he said about the other candidates was really pretty pleasant,” another donor said. “Until he got to Cruz.”

Bush took a harsh view of Cruz’s apparent alliance with Trump, who stood with the senator at a Capitol Hill rally last month in opposition to the Iran deal. While Trump, the current GOP poll leaders, has attacked most of his competitors in the 2016 field, he has avoided criticizing Cruz.

One donor, paraphrasing the former president’s comment in response to a broad question about how he viewed the primary race and the other Republican candidates, said: “He said he found it ‘opportunistic’ that Cruz was sucking up to Trump

Well, GW does know a winner when he sees one...that statement was a dead giveaway that Cruz is the one to watch!

This is perhaps the most important comment on the thread. We MUST have a President who will clean house in the bureaucracy and stand up to the media, two things Dubya was a miserable failure at.

It would not be Jeb, either.

Cruz's campaign, after initially declining to comment for this story, provided a statement from the senator Monday night.

“I have great respect for George W Bush, and was proud to work on his 2000 campaign and in his administration," Cruz said. "It's no surprise that President Bush is supporting his brother and attacking the candidates he believes pose a threat to his campaign. I have no intention of reciprocating. I met my wife Heidi working on his campaign, and so I will always be grateful to him."

I think that was a gracious reply to the attack.

Anyone who makes the mistake of assuming W was not part of the GOPe is not paying attention.

In fact, it was W's candidacy which opened my eyes to the GOPe, their very real presence and influence in the Party.

When the local Caucus was held for POTUS nomination at the end of Clinton's second term, I had no sooner arrived (and no vote been cast) when we were informed by the local Party Chair that George W Bush was going to be the candidate. Other stunts have ensued which indicated a very top down influence in the GOP. I thought that could be changed, but it has taken 16 years for that to reach critical mass, and few would listen if one complained.

Only the last two POTUS defeats have hammered the point home, finally, in spite of the "lesser evil" mantra, and I hope the awakening is sufficient and in time to save this Republic from what has become a power cartel in the nation's capital.

I find it downright sickening the way that both Bushes suck up to the Clintons.

They are in a small group in the US. As members of that group, they have had one of the most prestigious addresses in the world. They have more in common with each other than the average voter, and they know it. It's a tight club.

Too bad he couldn’t do a little serious ‘unleashing’ against the Progressives and Liberals during his time in office (instead we got Justice Roberts).

Bush silent on fairy boy and his left wing radical policies, silent on Hillary, but can speak up to attack Cruz.

What more proof does one need t see the Bushs are working with the left.

Yep, being criticized by W is plus mark in Cruz’s column for me.

But, Cruz did not need one.

Go cry on Bill Clinton’s shoulder, George. And while you’re at it, give Ramos and Compean commiseratory phone calls. Maybe Scooter Libby will lend you a sympathetic ear, Pal.

If the establishment doesn’t like Cruz or is afraid of him that is a plus for Cruz in my book. If I don’t get the nomination I will throw all my support behind Cruz.

Not that I’m cool with what he said about Cruz, but this may not be accurate. Remember, this is a private function and this was what someone said someone said. Sure President Bush has not publicly criticized Obama, but I’d be willing to bet he has privately.
