An Orthodox Jewish woman is suing the Lucille Roberts health-club chain for allegedly pitching a holy fit when she insisted on wearing a skirt during her workouts in Brooklyn. Yosefa Jalal, of Crown Heights, claims in court papers to be filed Friday that she was repeatedly harassed, threatened with arrest and ultimately had her membership revoked for following religious dictates regarding female modesty.

I hear you! My poor Baptist granddaughters were subjected to these ridiculous rules also.
Needless to say, when they turned 18, they visited me dressed in miniskirts and attractive sleeveless tops, and with a couple of tattoos!
They are all now happily married to non-Baptist husbands, and they are much more reasonable with their children ( my great-grands)...Thank God!
Also, I visited them once in their Bible Belt home. We took a walk in the woods. The girls climbed trees and hung upside down, the skirts went up over their heads, and their pretty panties were exposed.
I never laughed so much!
I've seen this very thing happen! Thank God the woman was okay, but it was some hippy chick in college who was talked into joined her friends in a step aerobics class and instead decided to walk on a stair climber while they were in class. The skirt got stuck in the track near the top of the device and ripped it clean off of her. She was scraped up real good, but she had to be taken back to her dorm with a towel around her waist on account of her being down to her panties.
This is just stupid. It's like people who work out in jeans. I just don't get what you think you're doing. There's zero advantage to that and you look like a fool doing it.
This Jewish woman could invest in some leggings or Yoga pants and likely still conform to her sect's modesty laws.
hey now, how did you get that pic of me?
“I think the gym was worried about liability if her skirt got caught in a stair-master, for example.”
Well, what if a man’s jockstrap got caught in an exercise machine? That should be considered, too. How about bras? Imagine the horror if a woman’s upper parts got caught in a tit wringer.
you fergot to delete it off my phone. Its not the best one of you but it serves for keeping with this thread. What the other freepers may not know is that your mind is as amazing as your vehicle. Cheers!
Yeah; it was rough growing up, being the oddball in so many situations. The up-side is that I have NO problem dealing with peer pressure, or any pressure now.
“I see London, I see France....”
When I was in school, including college, we could not wear pants. I can remember we wore pants one time in college because it had snowed and was really cold. We did everything in dresses, skirts, shirts/sweaters. Of course, that was back in the good ole days!
Your side, my side, and the truth. I think from Babylon 5.
If she had worn a burka, they would have left her alone.
I don’t see what the big deal is .
The gym should have left wear whatever she wanted as long as she wasn’t getting on a machine wear it could have gotten caught on .
It used to be common to wear a skirt over tights in dance classes . Capizio still makes them .
Miranda Kerr
I did that as a kid. Let’s see. I climbed trees, went down the big slides, played baseball, swinging on the big swings, played in our farm ponds wearing dresses, skirts/blouses. Oh, rode bikes, too. Never stopped any of us. A much simpler time. BTW, as a college student, we wore dressy clothes to football games. I remember getting in a big discussion with my high school senior English teacher about that . She was all for it but I thought it was awful. At some games, we had to park a long way from the stadium. Then, one of my dorms was on the other side of the campus from the stadium. It was awful walking in heels that far plus the early games were in very hot weather. That was what we did back then. All in all, we have wonderful memories of our days at State. Go Bulldogs. Miss those days.
Well on an elliptical depending on the skirt, there is a potential for getting tangled in the machinery....step exercise also.
Note her picture where she is just in yoga pants and a shirt (top).
IF she is truly concerned about modesty and is going to a women only gym why the need for the skirt???
This is typical red diaper doper baby victimhood demanding that the world obey their rules
I’m thinking a federal suit isn’t anything like a union suit.
The woman is an Orthodox Jewish woman, the same as my own daughter. For those who think she wanted to wear only a skirt, you are quite mistaken. These women always wear dark leggings with a skirt. They do not pose a problem with gym machinery.
This woman had been a member of the gym system since 2011, and certainly wore her skirts with leggings the whole time. You tell me a piece of gym machinery that a knee-length skirt would cause a problem and you can ban a skirt from that machine. A knee-length free-flowing skirt (as opposed to a tight pencil skirt) poses no problem with a treadmill or an elliptical, and it had not been a problem for her for years.
The woman left the exercise class and was using an elliptical when she was told her membership had been revoked. It seemed like she tried to accommodate the gym by leaving the class.
My daughter was a member of NY Sports Club for a couple of years and did not have a problem with them concerning her clothes.
This woman is an Orthodox Jew, not a “typical red diaper doper baby victimhood demanding that the world obey their rules”.
In her picture she is not wearing yoga pants. She is wearing black leggings with a standard black skirt over it. I bought them for years for my own daughter.
The reason for modest clothes when going to a woman only gym is that it is possible for there to have men pass through, workmen for example. This kind of gym minimizes the interaction with men but cannot guarantee it.
I have attended women-only classes with other Orthodox women and many continued to dress modestly, with loose skirts and leggings. The gym was overreacting in changing their policy towards exercise clothes after she had used them for years.
Plenty of Orthodox women wear skirts to the gym where I work out. Never had any problems with “getting caught in ellipticals” or any other such nonsense. Most gym equipment seems to have tangling problems associated with the arms, not the legs. How can you get tangled lifting weights? Using a leg press? Using the various pieces of equipment having you lift weights with your arms? Seems to me that this gym was looking to make trouble, even though the young lady tried to be accommodating. Besides, Lucille Roberts gyms are crap, with worn equipment and don’t even begin to give a really rigorous workout. Also, I found the “ladies” there to be very trashy and low. The locker room was a scandal. I am much happier at the gym where I work out now. Very clean, you can do your thing, and not a word from anyone.
Went to a high school football game yesterday. EVERY single girl was wearing either yoga pants or extremely tight pants.
