Son of a militant atheist and a pious mother, Putin lived through the collapse of the Soviet Union and the resurgence of capitalism as defined in Russian terms. Though raised a secularist, he is now a devout Christian in the Russian Orthodox tradition and has devoted himself to the advancement of Christianity and the repudiation of what he sees as Western decadence.

More like he's an opportunist who sees the opening from Western leaders abandoning Christianity.

Putin definitely understands the disaster on Russian culture and society that was the suppression of the Orthodox Church. He also understands that a renewed Orthodox Church can be a strong element of state power (like the Czars before him). He was, after all, a trained communist politician, so that’s how he thinks.

For the same reasons, I doubt he cares about Christians elsewhere, unless they are useful as a PR prop (which in this case, they are). Putin’s real views are unknown.

Certainly though - Obama will do nothing about protecting Christians.

I don't know about Orthodox Christian teachings on marriage, but I doubt they look favorably on Putin dumping his wife of 30 years, while at the same time keeping a 20-something Russian gymnast as a mistress (who has now bore him a child, some reports say).
