(CBS) Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich is on his way to Rome tonight. Before he left, he spoke out for the first time on that controversial meeting between Pope Francis and Kim Davis, the county clerk from Kentucky who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
Cupich in essence told CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine not to read too much into it.
A highly placed source inside the Vatican claims the Pope was blindsided.
The Vatican has since tried to distance Pope Francis from Davis. Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said the popes meeting with Davis was not an endorsement of her decision to refuse to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

Wow. Another ‘world leader’ without core convictions. Color me shocked......NOT!
...since you are so often blindsided by people whom you fly from Louisville to Washington to come and meet you.
Bad or just a stooge? There’s no difference!
How could the pope have been “blindsided”? Isn’t he supposed to be GOD on earth or something? Isn’t he supposed to be infallible? Isn’t he supposed to be omniscient? If God-on-earth, and omniscient, how could he possibly have been blindsided? It would be impossible, as “omniscient” and “blindsided” are mutually exclusive. Oh... wait... maybe he’s just a guy.
“Sorry, I dont buy the blindsided story. Its like saying the President was blindsided by meeting on his schedule sorry, like the President, the Pope has multiple handlers and they dont allow a meeting to occur that they dont want to occur.”
Actually these days telling the President he can’t play 18 he can only play 9 because he has meetings back in the Oval Office is blindsiding him.
Papal reinterpretation.
Just like all Popes before him, this one is a liar.
Bishops and priests are falling over themselves to assure their gay friends that the meeting with Davis means nothing.
Cupich was hand-picked by Donald Wuerl, the notoriously gay Cardinal, who was for years the secretary of the notoriously gay, teenager-abuser John Cardinal Wright. Cupich’s every word and action hints that he is gay. Cupich bends himself into a pretzel in every interview not to say anything offensive to abortionists, gay activists, etc.
Hes walking nothing back. The meeting wasnt what Mrs. Davis is painting it to be. She was merely part of a larger group in attendance.
He had the opportunity to defend Christianity and instead chose to lecture us about global warming and capitalism.
What a colossal disappointment.
How about that much hailed unscheduled meeting with the Sisters of The Poor ? Is the “Vatican” and Cupich going to walk that back ? Disgusting !
Cupich is evil and was made abp of Chicago over the head of Vigano and the USCCB, which didn’t even have him on the list for George’s post. He was also personally appointed by the Pope to the Synod , and is on his way there now (this interview).
I think Abp. Vigano is going to receive a bit of the Pope’s famous “mercy” pretty soon. The Pope and his gay henchmen are obviously pretty angry about this.
He’s archbishop Romero incarnate basically
But damn I had hoped this was genuine
He’s walking this back like a politician would
Doesn’t this somehow fall under that tricky denying Christ thingy?
How about those ten who died in Oregon, maybe the first admitted Christian didn’t know he or she was going down but the others who confessed their Christiananity certainly knew the outcome. Perhaps if the Pope would have stayed a little longer in America he would have seen what a true Christian does when facing the devil.
She was invited by the nuncio Vatican diplomatic rep in the US) and it’s quite possible that the Pope didn’t know much about her. The nuncio is a good orthodox Catholic, btw, and an intelligent man.
On the way back, the pope said some things about religious liberty, but he probably didn’t understand what the conflict was about until he got a phone call from the gay lobby in Rome. And now he’s frantically backing away from it.
You are taking two snapshots of the Church 2000 years apart and expecting them to line up in ways that are just plain ridiculous.
It’s like you’re staring at a photo of me in 1975 and insisting I can’t be the same person. “I don’t see any beard in this pic! And the clothes are completely different!”
Whereas if you looked at a photo from 1977, then 1980, then 1985, and right on up till today it’d be pretty obvious that, notwithstanding the beard and clothes, I am in fact the same person.
You know the Church didn’t end when Paul got to Rome right? So start with Acts. Then read Clement and Ignatius. Move to Irenaeus and Cyprian. Then Chrysostom and Augustine.
Wow, That is unconscionable.
The body of electioneering Bishops should be ashamed of this selection.
Has this man no historic recall?
Wasn’t it reported that the Vatican initiated the meeting? How can you be blindsided by it if you set it up in the first place?
Cupich is a piece of work. Before this is over, he’ll be lunching with the ladies from Planned Parenthood.
One big change in 2000 years is this...Peter was NOT called The Holy Father, he would have rebuked anybody that did call him that.
2000 YEARS ago they did not pull any punches, they were very blunt, they did not play down our sins.
