At Least 10 People Reportedly Killed in Oregon College Shooting

A suspected gunman was detained Thursday after reportedly killing at least 10 people at Oregon's Umpqua Community College, according to CNN.

Preliminary information indicated 10 people were killed and more than 20 were injured at the college, located at 1140 Umpqua College Road in the Roseburg community, Oregon State Police spokesman Bill Fugate told CNN.

TV station KATU initially reported state police said 15 people were killed, but later tweeted there were seven to 10 fatalities.

The shooter was believed to have been detained, Fugate also told CNN.

We first need to take away... every legally owned firearm in the country--

We secondly need to lock up forever... everyone of those that own more than one firearms as they are surely a danger to our society--

We then need to make the entire United States... one big Gun Free Zone--

Hanlin said sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of an active shooter at Umpquaa Community College in Roseburg at 10:38 a.m. The deputies found the gunman, who was not identified, inside of a campus building and a shootout began, according to Hanlin.

At that point, the man was shot and killed, Hanlin said. While the sheriff confirmed that there were ¿confirmed injuries and confirmed fatalities,¿ he declined to give a specific number, as other officials have.

Hanlin declined to describe the shooter or comment on what type of weapon he may have used. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, speaking in a separate briefing, said the shooter was 20 years old.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said officers located the shooters upon arriving at the college.

“They located the shooter in one of the buildings,” he said. “Officers engaged that suspect. There was an exchange of gunfire. The shooter threat was neutralized.

Law enforcement released the name of the shooter. Chris Harper Mercer. Age 26. Mixed race. Opposes organized religion. Has lots of Irish Republic Army pics on his MySpace account. Recovered 1 rifle and 3 pistols from the scene. May have an affinity for the Black Lives Matter movement.
