A university has banned students from wearing sombreros after they deemed the Mexican hats to be racist.
The student union (SU) at the University of East Anglia ordered staff at Pedros Tex-Mex Cantina in Norwich to stop handing out the free sombreros at a freshers fair in a bid to boost business.
Officials at the university believe that it would be offensive for anyone who is not Mexican to be wearing the traditional headwear.
They say the restaurant broke an advertising policy that states: Discriminatory or stereotypical language or imagery aimed towards any group or individual based on characteristics will not be permitted as part of our advertising.
Campaigns and Democracy officer Chris Jarvis told student newspaper The Tab: At the SU we want all members feel safe and accepted, so at all events we try to ensure that there is no behaviour, language or imagery which could be considered racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic or ableist.

It’s also probably racist to sell Mexican food!
Something tells me that feller wears tight britches rolled up at the ankles.
Someone please hand him a chaw of tobacco and an impact wrench.
He’s got the Kate Gosselin hairdo going on.
**Mariachi Bands are racist!**
Eating Mexican Food is racist!
Learning to speak Spanish is too!
Isn’t it nice of herm to be offended for the Mexicans?
I’m sure s/he’s such a “good person”.
Ha! So true!
Did Pat, I mean, Chris, have to go into counseling as a result of seeing a taco?
So let me get this straight. The University is treating me and this other person differently, restricting/promoting us and our actions based on our race. Hmm... Seems to me there's a term for the way the University is acting - treating people differently based on race - now what was it... Oh yeah, racist!
White people should not be allowed to work at Taco Bell.
Come to think of it, I think that’s a law that is already in effect.
“Discriminatory or stereotypical language or imagery aimed towards any group or individual based on characteristics will not be permitted as part of our advertising”
Can someone explain this?
Someone should take this little spoiled rich kid out behind the woodshed. I am tired of every self guilted white bread liberal thinking that their place in the world is to guilt others into accepting their false premises.
I read the article and it is full of non-sequiturs and plain stupid reporting. The facts that I can glean are : It’s a student union newspaper, not the university itself, the restaurant is privately located and owned, the ban is on the students wearing the sombreros. But how the same writer can make the statements they make is mind boggling.
This post made us all a little poorer for having read it. The headline should have been edited to warn us of the idiotic reporting.
Next: no one may wear Bermuda shorts unless they are actually from Bermuda.
LMAO Hats are racist now! Wait does that mean we aren’t allowed to party with them on Cinco de Mayo but they can come to our July 4th fireworks then? They can live among us and wear what they want or fully assimilate whichever they choose but we Americans cannot lend ourselves in turn to any of THEIR traditions or attire is it? Surprised they don’t ban us from learning Spanish or frying tortillas for fear of offending their supposedly tender sensibilities for goodness sake.
White people take note: We are being trampled upon. Our rights are starting to slowly erode. This is NOT the America of my youth and it’s not a free nor a fair America.
Wouldn’t know, this white person doesn’t eat there.
It cannot be explained. It comes from minds that have been taken over by alien space technology. Or drugs. Or both.
“White people should not be allowed to work at Taco Bell.”
I went into Taco Bell and it was all Viet people working there. The Greek place down the road employs all Mexicans. The hot dog place had a mix of ethnicities.
Fusion culture is confusing.
