Around 70 firefighters in 10 fire engines are battling the blaze at the Baitul Futuh Mosque in London Road.
People attending for prayers were evacuated from the building after the ground and first floors were hit.
Shocked onlookers gathered opposite the mosque, watching a dark plume of smoke billowing out of the building's roof, before they were ushered behind a police cordon.
Ambulance officials say one man has been taken to hospital with smoke inhalation but there are so far no other injuries reported.
Up to 10,000 people can fit inside the mosque but it is not known how many were in the building at the time.

What is the ethnic origin of the hundreds of workmen engaged in the building of a London Mosque?
Are they the Tom, Dick and Harrys from the estate buildings? Are they non-muslims? Just curious as to how and if all the skills and varied trades are represented by non-muslims.

Did the Firemen have to take their boots off? I believe as Chief I’d have soaked the surrounding area to prevent the spread, then told those ignorant barbarians “We don’t want to commit sacrilege in your armory.”

I’m not up to date with the muslim religion so forgive me for asking the following:
