The Popes comments to Congress on immigration have to be read in detail in order to understand what hes saying. Hes not making specific policy statements -- you must provide a path to citizenship. Instead hes defining the moral rules that should govern our actions:
Our world is facing a refugee crisis of a magnitude not seen since the Second World War. This presents us with great challenges and many hard decisions. On this continent, too, thousands of persons are led to travel north in search of a better life for themselves and for their loved ones, in search of greater opportunities. Is this not what we want for our own children? We must not be taken aback by their numbers, but rather view them as persons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation. To respond in a way which is always humane, just and fraternal.
His most important point is that we must treat refugees and would-be immigrants as we would wish to be treated. Thats a moral statement, not a detailed policy prescription.
If we were fleeing for our lives, wed want others to give us refuge, so we must provide refuge for those who are in danger of death.
The Pope is not saying that we are required to make refugees citizens or to give them welfare for life, just as we could not expect to be taken care of for life simply because at one point in time our lives were threatened. Further, we would not expect that others should solve the problems of our homeland while we reside in safety; even the French refugees from Nazism formed armed units that helped liberate Europe.
Hence, providing temporary shelter for those fleeing ISIS makes perfect sense,

Me too...

I’m trying to find the scripture which says the govt should end poverty and have open borders...
This pope seems more concerned with creating a utopia on earth. Not even Jesus was concerned about that.
Do a word search for “ Jesus” in the pope’s remarks
Look for a picture of him wearing his crucifix to lecture Congress
He coulda been lecturing us as a Unitarian
Someone musta got to him because still no Jesus at the UN but he wore his crucifix
This pope seems more concerned with creating a utopia on earth. Not even Jesus was concerned about that.

Beware of anyone with a grandiose vision to change the world or create utopian societies. These are dangerous people whose self-enriching ideas can lead to catastrophe for they are only interested in power.
Maybe the people who translated the Bible missed the part where dividing the loaves and fishes was called quantitative easing
Did anyone see on Drudge where that idiot congressman stole the Pope’s leftover water and drank some of it, and shared it with his wife and staff. He was going to take the rest and sprinkle it on his grandchildren? It said he did the same thing with a glass of water left by Obama once. I would post the article, but it was too difficult from an IPad with the long title. It’s on the Daily Mail website.
“If we were fleeing for our lives, wed want others to give us refuge, so we must provide refuge for those who are in danger of death. “
I’m thinking that if “we” were fleeing for our lives,m most of the women and children would not have been left behind-—but then, muzzies don’t think much of women and children. And why are not Christians being deported from this marvelous country by Obama while making room for his butt buddies?
It is amazing, as the media did for The Great and Powerful Wizzard of Boz, that they shape the man to their image without listening to the totality of his message. I like this man even more now....
Make a tent camp for them for refuge they can’t leave for their safety and later return them.
I did not catch who she was when he mentioned her but this one he mentioned I knew who he was
He said in his speech to Congress that he is an admirer of Thomas Merton and contemplative prayer
Thomas Merton was a Catholic monk (convert) who loved Sufi islam

The Pope should go to isis and appeal to their humanity directly. Certainly they would welcome his love for them.
Has the pope addressed the cause of the refugee crisis? Sure it’s ISIS. But it’s globalist forces acting via 0bama that have stirred up the Middle East. Look at Libya; not a perfect country, but relatively prosperous before the coup. Egypt. Kicking out a stable government for the MB which would have killed all the Coptic Christians if they could have stayed in power.
There are no moderate Syrian rebels opposing Assad; there are only ISIS and Al Queda rebels. Why is the U.S. supporting these terrorist groups one day and saying that they are attacking them the next? Why do these groups always seem to have new U.S. equipment? Is the military so stupid as to leave this stuff siting around for ISIS?
The pope is not going to challenge the elites. He won’t go after the crony captalists/neo-feudalists, he will attack the middle class via carbon taxes and wealth distribution. He will be in their camp when it comes to global
government, and a one world economic system. Sure, the pope does say some things that I agree with, but people need to realize that he does this to mollify his critics and maintain credibility. He must be opposed because he is solidly in the collectivist & elitist camp, not those that support individual rights and natural law.
The problem with the unequal distribution of wealth does not stem from those that have prospered in a truly free market system. It arises when a government refuses to respect individual rights and natural law. It’s not a lack of foreign aid that holds back undeveloped nations, it’s tyranny, war and corruption.
Apparently pope f. has refused to aknowledge the truth even when this story was played over and over in Argentina.
Ok then, what supportive words did he have for the world wide defender of freedom the United States of America?
*crickets*
I saw that reference too but didn’t look him up....but no surprise there.
I’m “friends” on FB with a priest who heard my - ahem - first Confession when I converted and is now a campus minister in No VA. He was excited to post these two referenced “Catholics” alongwith Lincoln and King...
All I could think is that if he follows the Pope and uses these individuals as guides in ministering to the college kids, he’s running the risk of skewing the Church’s that will take along time to heal.
To paraphrase John Paul II, “hypocrisy is the root of atheism....”
The Pope brought up Moses so I will refer to what God told him before the Israelites were allowed to enter the Promised Land. Remember this, MOSES WAS NOT PERMITTED TO IMMIGRATE TO THE PROMISED LAND.
The LORD God told the Israelites the reason they were being given the land was not because they were better than the natives, but because the natives were sacrificing their children to false gods. They were warned that if they followed these gods they too would be invaded. They did and they were.
I wonder if the 6 nations that still outlaw child sacrifice have an immigration problem?
I think you do Ms Day a disservice in your criticism. Her abortion and out of wedlock birth occurred before her conversion and baptism. After that she advocated a more traditional sexual morality.
On the other hand she was an avid pacifist regarding WW II and Vietnam, but hypocritically supported Castro’s violent over throw of Cuba. I believe she was sincere in her faith but didn’t do so well escaping the Marxist ideology of her youth when she thought about how to best help the poor. Unfortunately the ideas advocated through her Catholic Worker movement were very influential with the boomer era Catholics and I suspect that was why the Pope held her up as an example for an American audience.
As usual, they ignore the pro-life part, the part about the destruction of the family from without and within(unmarried parents and gays) while writing article after article about climate change, immigration, etc. Unfortunately, a large number of conservatives are falling for it.
For the Democrat politicians, who CLAIM to be Catholic, the Church policy is that you don’t vote for ANYONE who supports abortion, no matter what their views on other policies are.
He just needs to shut up and go back to his cozy, protected home where invaders are kept out.
Look for a picture of him wearing his crucifix to lecture Congress
He coulda been lecturing us as a Unitarian
Someone musta got to him because still no Jesus at the UN but he wore his crucifix
If true does he think that relieves him from being there in an official capacity for what he says? Or did he not want to offend someone? Little things have big meanings.....................
