Cruz: Excluding Muslims from presidency is unconstituional

It would be unconstitutional to disqualify a Muslim from the presidency because of religion, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Sunday.

“You know, the Constitution specifies there shall be no religious test for public office and I am a constitutionalist,” the Texas senator said during the taping of “Iowa Press” at Iowa Public Television.

Cruz was about Ben Carson’s televised statement that Islam is inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution. “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” Carson said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.

Cruz also referred to the ongoing controversy raised in the media over whether Donald Trump should have corrected a man who incorrectly stated at a rally that President Obama is a Muslim and not an American. “My view, listen. The president’s faith is between him and God. What I’m going to focus on is his public policy record,” Cruz said.

One area in which Cruz did not mind excluding Muslims, however, was from the ranks of refugees from Syria seeking asylum in the United States. He said they should settle in other Middle Eastern countries, citing concerns that some of the purported refugees may actually be terrorists.

“I think the Christians are a very different circumstance because Christians are being persecuted, they are being persecuted directly for their faith and the Obama administration has abandoned Middle East Christians,” Cruz said.

Several other Republican presidential candidates weighed in on the issue of Syrian refugees Saturday during a forum in Des Moines. Mike Huckabee agreed with Cruz that the U.S. should exclude Muslim refugees but accept Christians. Rick Santorum argued that even the Christians should be assisted in the region so they can return home when the violence ends.

Following his visit at Iowa Public Television, Cruz visited with restaurant-goers at the Machine Shed Restaurant in Urbandale for more light-hearted discussions while Iowans enjoyed their morning brunch.

Sorry- don’t follow from my original post#96. The question was whether or not Cruz was “on point” as I recall.

If you have a different point, you’ll have to explain, if you wish a reply. Thanks.

I though Carson said he wouldn’t support a Muslim for President, not that a Muslim would be banned from running. What, Ted?

....more appropriate to say, the issue originated with Donald...

Thanks for clarifying your statement, from your earlier remark about this being something that “Trump started”. It originated with the (likely) plant that brought it up - through no control of Trump’s - at the NH rally.

Again, he had no control, just as ANY of the rest of the candidates don’t have, over what gotcha/trap questions people (or plants) may ask.

There’s been a lot of back and forth about what Trump said, at a Iowa high school, in reply to a student’s question.

The student asked if Trump would consider a muslim, for his cabinet.

Trump, being the intelligent man he is, used the EXACT word that the student did, in his reply...

Trump: Would I CONSIDER putting a muslim-american in my cabinet? Absolutely! No problem with that. OK?

Trump trumped the issue, yet again! Now, not only did he prevent the MSM from having a gotcha answer, he answered as ANY candidate should and could....by only saying that he’d CONSIDER said appointment. This leaves the MSM with nothing to hold, except that Trump will CONSIDER ANY and ALL qualified Americans. Who can argue with that?

Cruz has only confirmed that Trump’s answer was the correct way to respond to this question. I applaud Cruz’ smart mind on his reply to the gotcha.

I loved when Trump said “I love the muslim people!” Again...just like when they tried their gotcha’s with the hispanics, and Trump said “I love the Mexican people!”, he nipped their absurd game right in the bud.

The MSM will try to keep this issue floating around the news, as best they can. Trump has already gone on - back to REAL issues and rising in the polls!

That’s Christianity. It’s NOT Sharia law. To claim otherwise is just plain ignorance.
****************

Nah. Religions demand obedience, see my post #304. Which is why JFK, circa 1960, had to go before a bunch of Protestant.\\

I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish; where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source; where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials; and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all.

For while this year it may be a Catholic against whom the finger of suspicion is pointed, in other years it has been, and may someday be again, a Jew— or a Quaker or a Unitarian or a Baptist. It was Virginia’s harassment of Baptist preachers, for example, that helped lead to Jefferson’s statute of religious freedom. Today I may be the victim, but tomorrow it may be you — until the whole fabric of our harmonious society is ripped at a time of great national peril.

“I love the Muslims. I think they’re great people.”

He said the same about Mexicans too, though he signaled out illegals as being criminals and we see how the media has painted his words....this is CNN for crying out loud

Look, I have issues with Trump, but I am not going to be swayed by a sound bite from CNN.

If Trump does indeed think that muzzies and their religion is not a threat to this county then yes, I will roundly castigate him for it.

I personally am a Cruz supporter, I have stated many times that this is way to early in the season to be sworn to nay candidate.

I'm not falling for the trap the media and the dems set to sit and tear each other apart, homey is not playing that game this time around.

I simply love how Trump has exposed the idiocracy, corruption and filth that is DC.

I support that a million %

Your petty diatribes will never change that.

You, sir, are a mess.

Actually, I pretty much agree with that assessment-

But, the point remains that Catholics (as with other religions) pledge their obedience to the Church— and in the case of Catholics— to the Pope, who is the symbolic representative of Christ on earth.

"Nothing- except you’ve just disqualified the entire Democrt party."

That brings up another question concerning the federal government’s constitutionally limited powers. How many political parties does it take to run the US Mail Service (1.8.7), one of the very few powers that the states have actually delegated to the feds where domestic policy is concerned.

Trump has caused another important issue to be talked about, that is for sure!

He’s done nothing but hammer the fact that we have a problem with some muslims, previously and on today’s MTdePressed.

I don’t think the “right to privacy” exists in the Constitution (incidentally, initially found to exist by Ike’s Earl Warren- Griswald v. Ct- contraception).

If that’s your question.

That’s right. Since yesterday, Trump has stated his support for ethanol subsidies, reiterated that he won’t tear up the Iran deal, and now the Muslim comments.

But it’s a “petty diatribe” to mention all of it.

Keep telling yourself that.

How do you equate the beliefs of Catholicism with those of islam?

********************
I’m merely defending Sen. Cruz’s assertion that religious affiliation does not exclude one from running for president under our constitution.

The equation is the separation of church and state-—all religions demand obedience to a deity and the religion—— however, the elected official must separate one from the other.

Can someone please clarify: if the president on inauguration day places his hand on the BIBLE
***********

I don’t know the legal answer- I know that in Ct, in courts, one no longer places his/her hand on a Bible.
