Cruz: Excluding Muslims from presidency is unconstituional

It would be unconstitutional to disqualify a Muslim from the presidency because of religion, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Sunday.

“You know, the Constitution specifies there shall be no religious test for public office and I am a constitutionalist,” the Texas senator said during the taping of “Iowa Press” at Iowa Public Television.

Cruz was about Ben Carson’s televised statement that Islam is inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution. “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” Carson said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.

Cruz also referred to the ongoing controversy raised in the media over whether Donald Trump should have corrected a man who incorrectly stated at a rally that President Obama is a Muslim and not an American. “My view, listen. The president’s faith is between him and God. What I’m going to focus on is his public policy record,” Cruz said.

One area in which Cruz did not mind excluding Muslims, however, was from the ranks of refugees from Syria seeking asylum in the United States. He said they should settle in other Middle Eastern countries, citing concerns that some of the purported refugees may actually be terrorists.

“I think the Christians are a very different circumstance because Christians are being persecuted, they are being persecuted directly for their faith and the Obama administration has abandoned Middle East Christians,” Cruz said.

Several other Republican presidential candidates weighed in on the issue of Syrian refugees Saturday during a forum in Des Moines. Mike Huckabee agreed with Cruz that the U.S. should exclude Muslim refugees but accept Christians. Rick Santorum argued that even the Christians should be assisted in the region so they can return home when the violence ends.

Following his visit at Iowa Public Television, Cruz visited with restaurant-goers at the Machine Shed Restaurant in Urbandale for more light-hearted discussions while Iowans enjoyed their morning brunch.

I love Ted but he’s now bending a knee to somebody. Islam is a theocracy not a religion which Ted should be arguing. We all know Trump is not on board with this crap and that’s why he’s ahead in the polls.

Carson showed showed great courage in his answer and deserves respect for his fortitude.

There already is a mozlum POTUS.

Carson, myself, or anybody else doesn’t have to like it, or think that mozlems should be POTUS.

When the Founders put in the Constitution that there should be no religious test for office, they meant exactly that.

If the crypto-muslim Hussein Obama had not lied about his religion he would never have been POTUS in the first place.

So a mozlum practicing Taquiya and making pretend he is a Christian is not subject to a religious test.

” Roman Catholics own their obedience to the Pope, as the direct descendant of Christ..”

I think you mean “owe?”

That statement would be true for matters of religion/faith, not civil law. You know, the old “render unto Caesar....” business. That’s Christianity. It’s NOT Sharia law. To claim otherwise is just plain ignorance.

I also think the Pope is recognized by Catholics as the descendant of St. Peter, not Jesus Christ. Otherwise, you get A for accuracy ;)

Can someone please clarify: if the president on inauguration day places his hand on the BIBLE and makes an oath to uphold the constitution, it is clear that the Bible is the authoritative document that gives the constitution its authority. A Muslim president cannot make an oath on the Koran, it would render his oath meaningless. And if he does agree to take the oath on the Bible, it is a meaningless gesture leading to the lawlessness we have already been subjected to.

I agree. Carson’s not my candidate but he said what he thought, others be damned. Why not? He’s not going to be president and he’s entitled to his opinion whether Constitutionally-correct or not.

In the same sense that Dred Scott was once the law of the land. Tell me where in the Constitution the right to privacy that was the lynchpin of finding that abortion is the “law of the land” is found. When, in other words, did homicide become a federal matter? I can’t find it in the Constitution.

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof [emphases added]. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

Otherwise, what am I overlooking?

There is a reason Progressives have called themselves liberals and tried to hide from the word Progressive.

If you call them liberals the politically naive may research that and find the source of the term with the Founders when it meant something quite different. If the politically naive investigate the term Progressive it will lead back to its source in the rise of communism in the late 19th century.

For those who accept things blindly there are no means to educate them and its pointless to worry about it.

What if Americans are too smart — and refuse to elect a Muslim?

That WAS the hope. Certainly the knowledge of it should be out there because hiding it is deception.

When you have someone on the ropes like we did “Liberals”, you don’t say, “Okay what word can we assist you fleeing to.”

We’re entirely too accommodating, and we pay for it.

We had the left categorized so well they had to flee who they were. And we couldn’t wait to help them.

Conservatives started calling the Progressives as soon as the Left asked them to.

I still call them Liberals.

You people are living in an absolute fantasy world if you think someone can be kept off the ballot because of their religion or for that matter for being a communist. Those simply aren’t part of the constitutional requirements for being eligible for president. Because we don’t agree with someone doesn’t mean they’re ineligible to be on the ballot for president.

Please explain what you mean by "you people"- someone who doesn't agree with you?

"You people" need to get it through your head- Islam is not a religion.

I am Cruz supporter but he made a tactical error responding to this media bait.

Islam has no place in a western country- look at what they have already achieved in Europe. The cringing liberals who cater to them are fools.
