How do you equate the beliefs of Catholicism with those of islam?

I’m merely defending Sen. Cruz’s assertion that religious affiliation does not exclude one from running for president under our constitution.
The equation is the separation of church and state-—all religions demand obedience to a deity and the religion—— however, the elected official must separate one from the other.
Islam is still not a religion but rather a hate-filled ideology bent on destroying the West. That would have been a better answer for Cruz to give. Cruz is still my choice-but the media is hell-bent on trying to undermine all the GOP candidates and are having some success.
