MUSIC FOR CLASSICAL WALLERIN’

This is the finale of one of Tony Dvorak’s greatest chamber works with piano. This performance repeats the sonata exposition, which is wonderful because it is such a kick-ass way to start a piece. The resolution at 1:50 and 4:15 always makes my screen go blurry. Development is based on both subjects. The recap of the second subject finally brings back the tonic key of E-flat, which we have not heard since the first movement. The piece ends with material from the first movement, and it’s one of the most powerful endings that Dvorak ever wrote.

The pianist in this video, Carmen Knoll, is exceptional. She has an iron technique.

MUSIC FOR CLASSICAL WALLERIN’

I’ve often programmed the fourth movement of this piece, which is a set of variations on his song “The Trout.” This scherzo, marked “presto,” is sheer fun.

At the first performance at the home of merchant Sylvester Paumgartner, Schubert wrote out all the string parts for Sylvester’s family to play, but he played the piano part from memory.
