Fatal shootings by police and other law enforcement agencies could soon be avoided thanks to a device that acts like an 'airbag' for a bullet.
'The Alternative' device looks like a metal ping pong ball and can be attached to the barrel of any gun.
The idea is that the ball breaks off when a bullet is fired and melds with the shot, effectively slowing it down to result in less injury.
It is hoped the 'airbag for a bullet' could reduce the number of civilians killed by police officers in potentially lethal situations.
The device, designed by Alternative Ballistics in San Diego, California, takes the form of a metal ball or 'bullet capture device' fitted over the barrel of a gun.
Once the gun is fired, the bullet embeds itself inside the device without a chance of it escaping.
The bullet's energy is simultaneously transferred to the alloy ball, propelling it towards the target.
'The Alternative' works like an 'airbag for a bullet', slowing it down to one fifth of its intended speed.
When the device with the bullet inside hits a targeted person, it still causes serious pain, but less injury to a body than a conventional bullet.
In this way, it is 'less lethal' than a regular bullet and is designed to incapacitate a target without piercing the skin.
If the gun is fired again, a regular bullet will be fired.
The company said the technology represents a critical 'missing link' between lethal force and less-lethal force.
'By utilising our bullet capture technology in appropriate situations, police are likely to prevent loss of life in a way that was – until now – not possible,' the firm said.

This is just dumber than hell. The purpose of a gun is lethal takedown. There are already alternatives for “less than lethal takedown”.
So the good guy gets one shot and the bad guys get to shoot as fast as they can swap mags ...
Just set the phaser to stune.
So the first shot really is a warning shot.
No need to drop the taser and grab the pistol if the warning wasn’t taken seriously.

on this theme just load a no lethal round in the chamber.. just as useful ... but then if you really need a 1 shot stop.. oh thats right we will always have lots of time to decided and to make a follow up shot if needed since gun combat is a low stress environment. sigh..
a marginally better solution would be to have a M-243 style under barrel second weapon with a .60 cal or so pepper cartridge. for stun and sniff results.
Looks like the good guy can give one warning shot and the rest of the magazine is going to fly bullets without airbags.
I thought that’s what rubber bullets, beanbag guns and tasers were for.

It’s a one-shot device on the end of an semi-automatic pistol. You shoot your one non-lethal shot and you are 5.5 pounds of trigger and a 1/4 inch away from firing the second shot. Cops (and most people) are taught to “shoot to stop”. So, a second shot usually follows the first by instinct.
So, after the shoot, the #blacklivesmatter activists will then say, “you had a non-lethal device on your gun, but you CHOSE to kill this poor choir boy who loved his grandma and was going to invent warp drive and find a cure for cancer. Why did you have to take that second shot??”
Keep things as they are: keep guns lethal and carry a separate non-lethal weapon too.
Well, I guess now you can say:
Don’t bring a ping pong ball to a gun fight!
The only reason the gun comes out is to make the shot.
Guns are not to be used unless there is a lethal situation.
You do not shoot to wound. You only shoot to kill.
This “air bag” feature breaks ever rule of engagement.
If there is not a lethal situation don’t use your gun in the first place.
There is too much going on, too many things can change, to mess with this added step.
You don’t want to die? Do what that officer instructs you to do.
It’s your best chance of survival, and you can argue it out after the event.
