Just announced live on Australian TV.
Unlikely. I think Turnbull will stick with Abbott's policies on that. Even the Labor Party has come around to the fact that it's the only approach that works.
I’m seriously crossing every finger and toe here that you’re right.
That he was a partner at Goldman Sachs (read above thread for bbc link) is disconcerting and you should definitely be heard if he tries something really stupid...
I regard the Goldman Sachs thing as a bit of a red herring really - it’s getting play in the US and UK press largely because of the fact that American and British know what Goldman Sachs is but are fairly unlikely to have heard of anything else that Turnbull has been involved in as the rest is very specifically Australian. What he is known for here, in terms of business, is mostly starting one of Australia’s first truly successful internet businesses. Besides that he was a lawyer who fought very hard on issues of freedom of speech (and I hope he will come back to that as Prime Minister, because some work needs to be done there), and he was once head of the Australian Republican Movement (which wants to replace Australia’s constitutional monarchy with a Republic). The Goldman Sachs thing was a very short period compared to everything else.
Sounds like the Margaret Thatcher / John Major fiasco.
Tony Abbott is out because the Australian economy is doing poorly due to world commodity prices tumbling. All this is beyond Tony Abbott’s control and influence but he is Prime Minister so he gets the blame. Tony has irritated the lefties and the global warming nutters so the long knives were out.
Polls showed the Liberal Party was going to lose the next election with Tony Abbott at the head so in a pre-emptive strike he was replaced as party leader.
Oh, so they speak Latin in Australia?
Who knew...
It seems that every politician that’s Catholic, isn’t.
Ozzies are Latinos?
China to invade Australia in 3...2...1...
Thanks for your perspective, very interesting info. I will think of them as right center and left center, arrived at by by respecting the prevailing sentiment of their core voters. In a coalition government this would seem to me to qualify umm or classify the Nationals as a supporting conservative party and the Liberals as a supporting progressive party.
Global Warming on Free Republic here, here and here
Very disappointing imo.
Ping.
Where do these guys stand on third-world immigration?
In simple terms, they both believe in severely restricting Australia’s immigration from such places - something that is not too hard to us to do given our sea borders in comparison to some other places.
But then again, even the left in Australia generally supports this.
You all are smart folks. You might be the last first world country standing with the way things are going.
I can see his upper lip.
Barely. And I’ve seen kinder eyes on a shark. Anyway, it was my dad and brother’s superstition. I’ve just noticed the same seeming coincidence enough times to no longer think they were necessarily crazy.
The front cover of the Daily Telegraph was just the full-page photo of Turnbull with the title something like, Smiling Assassin.
