I Didn’t Ask Trump 'Gotcha Questions'
Politico ^ | 9/5/15 | HUGH HEWITT

The late, great writer and reporter Michael Kelly was a guest on my radio show almost weekly from its debut in July of 2000 through his death outside of Baghdad in April 2003. So was Christopher Hitchens—more than 70 times in fact—until his death in late 2011. Kelly always emphasized that journalism was a “craft,” not a profession and Hitchens that it was very much a moral crusade. I think it is both, and more. It is part of a functioning, free democratic Republic, and its practitioners must not be intimidated.

The very best journalists—those who go to the front lines of combat like Kelly and Hitchens, John Fisher Burns, Rajiv Chandrasekaran, Dexter Filkins, Robert Kaplan, David Kirkpatrick, Thomas Ricks and scores of others routinely ask tough questions of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines they cover, from the privates to the generals. These journalists set a standard for desk jockeys like me who cover politics and public policy but who have never been remotely in harm’s way. I think we who work from the comfort of studios owe it to the public generally, and specifically to men and women deployed at the tips of various spears around the world, to ask would-be presidents how they will conduct themselves as Commander-in-Chief.

In the weeks since the first GOP presidential debate I have conducted 30 interviews with would-be nominees. Some have been prickly. (John Kasich as my home state governor seems particularly entitled to mock me and my questions, which is fine by me. He is a Steelers fan after all.) In my view all 30 have been fair. Some disagree about my Thursday interview with Donald Trump, the fourth I conducted with him in the past month. Other earlier interviews from the spring have also caused other candidates

HAHA! As always, work up your load, and never take anyone else’s advice into play. Your rifle is not my rifle.

When they say "It's not about the money," it's about the money.
When they say "I didn't ask gotcha questions," they asked gotcha questions.

I tried 10 minutes of surfing to try to find a final list of moderators for the debate.

All I could come up with as definites were Jake Tapper as lead moderator and Huge Halfwit as an interrogator.

I don't know if there will be a third.....I assume there will be, but I can't find who. Wolf Blitzen is mentioned as a possibility....and, believe it or not, there's a serious petition being circulated on the net for Jon Stewart to fill a third chair!

The line-up is GOP-hostile and snarky enough without Stewart. Heaven forfend that it will be this creep Stewart rounding out the squares!

True dat. Been using the 55 gr Sierra Game Kings. I really wish someone made a reasonably priced 62 grain version. It’d be my self defense bullet of choice.

Look ,if Hewitt didn’t ask Fiorina the same questions which seems to get lost in these as-su-me-s I would agree. Now some will say she previewed the questions, that wasn’t done. Why ? Because Hewitt is a show off he’s gotta look smarter than anybody else. But she answered the same questions. That’s the difference.

Was Fiorina on first?

If not, there’s your difference.

From what I understand, No. Their answers were taped for segments individualy without each other hearing the other’s responses. Then played on the same show. So the gotcha was Hewitt’s decision to play Trumps reponses first and Fiorina’s after. Either way if Hewitt played Carla’s replys first and Trumps after, the results would be the same. Frankly I don’t think Hewitt thinks much of either and it was his way of doing either in that’s why he set this up.

Okay, then that at least sounds like a reasoned way to do ask and present.

I still think the Al Quds question is an obscure one. If the Candidate knows, I’m not sure that impresses me all that much.

At this point I’m thinking more instincts rather than individual policy assessments of a particular terrorist organization and or leader.

I think Carly lied. I think she knew exactly what Hewitt asked The Donald and was thus prepared to answer the same questions. I guess I’m just more cynical than you regarding Fiorina. I think she looks for any advantage and then takes it. Now, I also think that’s a pretty good quality in general. However, I suspect Fiorina didn’t know all the terrorist names on Hewitt’s list until she looked many of them up in order to be able to perfectly answer Hewitt’s list of names question. Color me exceedingly sceptical of Carly’s oh too perfect response.

No offense, but my self defense load is #4 buckshot.

Good luck on trying to find a softpoint 62 grain bullet. For some reason, no manufacturer seems interested.

#4 Buck is one of my favorite shotgun loads. It “splits the difference” very well IMO.

And I’m baffled as to why Sierra, Hornady, or someone doesn’t make a reasonably priced soft point in the 62-65 grain range. Put a canalure on it and it’d be just about ideal for the reloader looking for a self defense cartridge you could crank out by the thousand lot.

Push it along around 2900-3000 FPS and it would put bad guys down DRT.

If there’s some technical reason I sure wish someone would enlighten me.

dear pug,

Make sure you steal the whole thing, with my permission.

I have been a writer since elementary school, when spell checking was you and the Library’s Collegiate Webster’s Dictionary. I have been published, in the past. I put myself through The Long Ridge Writers’ School. I was the associate editor for a website, for a time. I had a run as a guest columnist in the regional newspaper for over six years, till I got that gutcheck saying, ‘It’s time.’
