For many years now grassroots conservatives have grumbled that the Republican establishment in Washington views them with contempt. Rarely has that contempt been displayed as brazenly as it was on this weeks episode of Fox News Sunday.
During the shows panel discussion, columnist George Will and Arthur Brooks of the American Enterprise Institute in particular showed how GOP bigwigs view their base. Will started the banter by suggesting that the popularity of insurgent GOP candidates was tantamount to primal scream psychotherapy where voters are venting their frustrations by backing political newcomers over their more traditional rivals. Brooks seconded Wills thesis and said,
This is a low information, high entertainment, high protest moment Republican voters always aggregate up towards this kind of mainstream person Republicans always come back. They came back to Mitt Romney.
Show moderator Chris Wallace, playing devils advocate, sounded like the only conservative in the room when he said that voters aggregating back to Romney and McCain was precisely the problem, that they were not the right candidates to support.
The message coming from these movers and shakers in Republican politics was quite clear: Go ahead, you unsophisticated rubes. Have your temper tantrum and spend your summer getting excited about these non-politicians. When the rubber meets the road and primary season starts for real, youll come to your senses and support a pragmatic, country club Republican who values compromise and reaching across the aisle to our esteemed Democrat colleagues. The result will be the continued growth of Big Government and furthering our once-great nation on the glide path to oblivion.
Perhaps there is a more accurate way to analyze the GOPs Summer of Discontent. Namely, that the conservative base has seen their partys presidential nominees offer up weak, centrist campaigns that only served to propel Bill Clinton and Barack Obama into the White House.
The GOP base took matters into their own hands during the last two mid-term elections by sending Democrats packing and replacing them with Republicans who promised to fight Obamas transformational change. A few of these people refused to join the Beltway cabal in Washington, most notably Ted Cruz with his challenge to McConnell, but far too many succumbed, then gave endless excuses why they couldnt keep their campaign promises.
The party elders who share the views on display on Fox News Sunday will not just give up control of the party to the fed-up masses in flyover country. Control must be taken by refusing to elect the same tired party apparatchiks.
One thing is certain: abandoning non-career politician outsiders and aggregating to the media-approved candidates is the surest way to keep America in decline. Voters should ignore the advice of the conventional wisdom that has led us directly to this point. Based on the poll numbers of the non-DC-insiders, the public is sending a stern message.
George Will and Arthur Brooks...
These clueless idiots just don’t get it.
What I think of these traitorous-to-the-electorate freaks remains unsaid.
No worse that 2/3 of FR think of me! 1/3 claim I am GOPe and another 1/3 think I am a rightwing radical that is to much of a purest that it will cost us the White House.
Sounds like their backup strategy is voter fraud in the primaries. It’s how they got rid of Ron Paul in 2012. Weather in Maine kept them from counting all precincts, and a truck of votes was lost, delegates replaced, etc...
Yeah. This is not 2008 or 2012. Most of us understand the game now and know we have nothing left to lose. Dem and GOPe is the same thing. GOPe is probably worse.
With Carson now supporting amnesty, Trump is all we have. If the GOPe succeed in their dirty tricks against him, then...well...CURTAINS.
As the truckdriver from Nebraska told Rush today. they are still hoping and praying that Nelson Rockefeller will come back and save their party.
There are currently four of the Republican gaggle that I could vote for if they should be the nominee. Trump, Carson, Fiorina and maybe Cruz.
Subject to change of course, but so far this is the four that has not lied to me .......................yet.
Other than these four, it will be third party, write in or sit it out.
My contempt for the establishment GOP trumps their contempt for me.
Pun intended.
With you 100 percent. I despise these political weaklings in the Republican establishment more than I despise Obama.
Papa Bush Banned any White House Contact with George Will after they butted heads
..... but before 41 Joined Planned parenthood as Board of Director with his wife Barbara. That Houston planned parenthood also got caught and convicted of Medicaid Fraud . Now they are part of an Emmy should be nominated Pro-Life Investigation on Video scrunching heads to keep Baby livers and Hearts Intact!
Just another reason to elect JEB.. the Loving and caring President
These guys do NOT have a clue.
NOT. A. CLUE.
I would be banned from FR if I expressed my true feelings about the GOPe. There are three candidates that I will support if they are the nominee:
Cruz
Trump
Carson
Any other nominee & I stay home. I’ve had it with the feckless traitors.
Mel Brooks’ “Piss Boy”, History of the World, Part 1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGfXiIXTpE0
THAT is what the GOP thinks of its supporters.
PISS BOY.
So far, Will and Brooks have been right.
Most of the conservatives who are freaking out now about immigration are very late to really caring about the issue. It never stopped them from supporting open borders politicians before. I’d like to think that these people have had a genuine conversion, but I have no faith in them.
Where were they back in the 90’s when the situation was not as desperate and many people in the establishment were open to reducing immigration if that’s what people really wanted? Go back and read some establishment writing on immigration from that era. The Atlantic magazine had a sympathetic article about the anti-immigration novel Camp Of The Saints in 1994 and the New York Times editorialized against amnesty as recently as 2000. Congressional Democrats even had a plan to reduce immigration in the late 90’s, but Gingrich, may he burn in hell forever, never moved on immigration legislation. Democrats were terrified the GOP would use immigration against them and were ready to go along with drastically reducing legal immigration as well as cracking down on illegals.
For starters, everyone needs to acknowledge that Pat Buchanan was right and that the neocons who purged him from mainstream conservative movement are scum who hate America. I won’t trust anyone who balks at affirming that.
Let’s hope conservatives have learned a lesson for once.
All the talking heads out there sucks! RINO’s and squished can go pound sand! I’m voting, but I’m writing in names of others if they nominate some pathetic wimp again!
