Police departments face a recruiting shortage amid a growing anti-cop mood that some fear has taken the pride out of peacekeeping and put targets on the backs of the men and women in blue.
Open calls for the killing of police have been followed by assassinations, including last week's murder in Texas of a Harris County sheriff's deputy. Instead of dialing back the incendiary rhetoric, groups including "Black Lives Matter" have instead doubled down at demonstrations with chants of "Pigs in a blanket, fry me like bacon." Public safety officials fear the net effect has been to demonize police, and diminish the job.
"It's a lot harder to sell now," Jeff Roorda, business manager of the St. Louis Police Officers Association and former state representative, told FoxNews.com. "This is a very real phenomenon."

"You no longer just have to worry about your life while in uniform," he said. "Now you have to be worried about the well-being of your family," he said.

Knowing police face public scorn or career-ending legal battles even if they acted properly has convinced many prospective cops to abandon their dreams of patrolling America's streets.
"I saw all this anti-cop propaganda and I was like, 'Who needs this?' said Antonio, a New Yorker who asked that only his first name be used. The 32-year-old had applied and been accepted into the NYPD academy, but withdrew his candidacy amid the cop-bashing climate sweeping the country.
Even top police brass understand why the shield has lost its shine.
"Right now, policing is not the most attractive occupation that they could probably get into," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told CBS.

Like in the Paper Lace song.
Hadn’t heard of that one, but it does not surprise me.
Wow, this post is from 14 years ago. None of this stuff is exactly new operating procedure.

“Dirty scumbags unable to form complete sentences have ALWAYS loathed cops, always will. And it doesnt matter, even if they back that up with bullets, as they are now, along with Presidential approval, amazingly enough.
I think the real sea-change is the change in the view of the cops among the white middle-class.”
Two separate but slightly over lapping problems:
1 there has always been that small group of troublesome cops who abuse their power (eg give them a warrant to serve, the subject will be beat up).
2 Too many governments see their police force as a revenue source.
As most bad cops cops are not actually doing anything criminal, they are just on a power trip, properly reforming or removing them from the force, is difficult and there will always be more.
“natural born idiot.”
Is there an artificially born person? Seems to me you make the idiot statements.
“I see a bloodbath coming the next election, assuming someone like Trump is the candidate, and the democrats will be the ones slaughtered.”
I also see that in spite the Democrats losing, the Democrats throwing an extremely violent temper tantrum. There will not be an orderly transfer of power.
Crazy aint it..... as long as there is a human element in the mix it will always possess a potential for failure.... pro or con .
Let the black sections of the cities PO-leece themselves.
Reminds me of my Army years when we lost Senior NCOs and Captains and Majors - BY THE DROVES - under Clinton.
I loathe Socialists. They have been chipping away at EVERY underpinning of Society for DECADES and WHO pays for it?
Law Enforcement, the Military and we law abiding TAXPAYERS.
Screw Them. *SPIT*
I can personally attest to this. My agency has 12 applicants for four jobs. We typically have six times that. Academy classes are ten instead of thirty.
BLM is getting what they want. No police. The ONE may use the lack of police to declare martial law and delay the election indefinitely.
That’s what happens when the profession lets standards and expectation of their peers go south and waits until the Left organizes around the problem to “fix” it.
Conservatives were talking about it and asking (I was begging) for good cops to stand up to the leadership/unions and get rid of the dead wood before the left gathered around the problem and started murdering with an excuse of police brutality.
They say, as always, it is racism. But in truth bad cops were shooting pets and beating up and abusing whites, too. Some just did not love people; have respect for human dignity. And those “some” did enough damage to touch enough people that something had to change. Police officers could have fixed it themselves, but they just closed ranks.
I had a young recruit come to my house one day and tell me after I had checked with state and local authorities about sighting in my new pellet rifle in my spacious backyard that I was illegal. It took a seasoned female cop to tell him I was in my legal rights. It is such unfortunate incidents that go against the many good cops.
It is great that she stood up for the rule of law. Many are doing it now more than ever. If more good cops will stand up like this, things will get better quick. There are more good and bad by far.
These morons don’t seem to realize that if law enforcement fails, it will be up to the PEOPLE to uphold the laws.
And the PEOPLE don’t have to follow the same ROE that law enforcement must adhere to.
It certainly may come to that.
Of course, the way the law is currently structured,
it protects criminals from citizen retribution
more than it protects citizens from criminals.
You got that right. About six years ago I got stopped for jaywalking in Waikiki. The cop admonished me in a qute professional manner, then added that I should be more of a role model. No ticket, which was about $125 as I recall. I thought about it as I walked away, doubled back, called him over, and complimented him on his manner. Then I advised him to find another profession and explained why. I left him with a rather bemused expression. The point is it was obvious even to me that bad things were this way coming. And we haven't reached a turning point yet.
Big cities like Memphis want to only recurit Black police officers. Trouble with that is the STATS. While they make up 13% of the population, 50% of them have been convicted of crime or been to prison, which gives you less of a pool of candidates to chose from.
They you have the factor they can’t pass the promotions test with out screaming Racism. Memphis has gone to a number only system and they still scream Racism when a white officer out scores them. And being MANDATED to live in MEMPHIS instead of the surrounding lower crime counties does not help either. Even the Black Police officer wants to live outside of Memphis.

This is true.
This is similar to the story of Ferguson, MO. Ferguson is a small suburb. They can’t afford to pay the cops what they’re worth. Blacks cops didn’t want to work there. They - by the color of their skin - could get better jobs in better cities over better qualified white officers which leads to resentment in the ranks. Which leads to racial strife in the city.
Then one August day last year....
Well, you know the details.
