Even before real-estate mogul Donald Trump called undocumented immigrants "rapists and murderers" who "have to go," California contractor Carlos Castañeda was having difficulty hiring enough workers to pick celery and squash.
Now Castañeda and others fear Trump's talk about erecting a "big beautiful wall" at the border and deporting millions could make it near impossible to find the guest workers they need, and who would obtain legal status under most comprehensive reforms bills.
"There are growers out there screaming for labor," said Castañeda, a farm labor contractor in San Luis Obispo County in central California. "The people who are coming in are doing the work that not a single American would like to do."
Trump's brash talk about stopping undocumented immigration has excited GOP primary voters, turbocharged his campaign and spurred similar get-tough pledges from several rivals, including Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. Scott Walker. But the view from many conservative-leaning agricultural communities is disgust, bordering on dread. Farmers say the candidates pronouncements have exacerbated already difficult labor shortages and brought counterproductive political attention to issues they had hoped to resolve quietly in Congress through legislation overhauling the nations broken guest-worker program.
Many say they will do everything in their power to educate the public about why Trumps positions jeopardize their livelihoods and the nations access to fresh fruit and vegetables.

“Trump is for higher taxes. No thank you.”
Please explain. That is not at ALL what I have repeatedly seen.
Well, another part to that lie...they also are taking jobs that Americans would love to do....drywall, construction etc.
just realize what you are doing to your own food prices......probably doubling fruits and vegetable prices. And be willing to go to the fields yourself. I’m sure all the unemployed hipsters at Starbucks living on government handouts in mama’s basement will rush out there.....for maybe 50 bucks an hour.
I mean, that is, if you’re interested in being intellectually honest about this.
Waaaaaah. I won’t be able to keep my labor costs low by breaking the law anymore. Sniff.
I’ve worked in a chickenfeed plant. Now, that’s a story.
Getting rid of the EPA would help farmers. They will find a way to harvest the fields after the wall is built.
Pray America is waking

Oh come on. These farmers pay the illegals below minimum wage (cash). This is after the farmers already get subsidies themselves from the government. Since the illegals get paid cash, they have no income to show, and get all the goodies they can from the government.
So the tax payer gets to pay for the farm subsidies and the welfare, so that the farmer can hire cheap labor. Sounds like a sweet deal for the farmer. The tax payer, not so much.
If it means booting the illegals out, I’ll pick my own damned food thank you very much.
There, title fixed. This is what they really mean
I can’t believe it.
In a country that implemented ObamaCare and gay marriage..now suddenly were a nation of ‘can’t do’s”
Come on Farmers!
If a trans-whatever can be hired at the Casa Blanca than surely you can figure out a solution?
If we can make deals that allows Iran to get the nuke than this ought to be childs play?
If Faggakhan, BlackLivesmurder, the Black Pansies Party can step up, with the blessings of king ‘butthole’ ibama, and call for the death of whitey and cops.
If Hillary can escape jail time.
If the GOPe can endorse Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, John McCain
Then someone tell me what isn’t possible in America?
This is America! Home of the Clintons and Obamas. This is the confiscated lands of the Federal Government. Don’t tell me Ameri-can’t!
If I see this lie one more time.....
All I’m doing is saying that when the cost of producing goods go up, it’s not like it all comes out of the profits of the producer....it comes out of the pockets of consumers. That’s the extent of my point.
A few questions few seem interested in answering are these:
A: Is making America Great Again mean that our citizens have to do the bottom of the barrell jobs?
B: Or, do we think that somehow we can magically float with an economy with nothing but good jobs? You think we don’t need the awful jobs to be filled?
C: Do you or anyone you know want these jobs?
D: Are you too gutless to admit that it is us, the consumer, who ALSO benefits from low cost labor?
I’m not advocating a position here. I’m simply saying we need to understand fully what we are asking for. I see little evidence we do.
go pick some lettuce and STFU.
That’s what they used to do when the laws were enforced.
It’s not just the harvest. When Trump places tariffs on imports to the U.S. then every other country will place tariffs on our exports to them. That includes a lot of agricultural produce - wheat, corn, soybeans, cotton, etc. I expect U.S. farmers will see their overseas markets dry up pretty quickly.
California farmers: The new slave holders
Why hire a legal worker for minimum wage when you can pay an illegal worker an illegal wage ($3/hour)?
THEY ALREADY DO.
In a free market this farmer would have to raise what he is willing to pay “legal” workers until he gets the workers he needs. He would then pass the added cost onto consumers.
And once you hire some illegals they will attack any legal workers you hire. So then you get to whine that no legals will work for you.
