President Barack Obama on Monday will officially restore Denali as the name of North America's tallest mountain, ending a 40-year battle over what to call the peak that has been known as Mount McKinley.
The symbolic gesture comes at the beginning of a three-day trip to Alaska where Obama hopes to build support for his efforts to address climate change during his remaining 16 months in office.

Actually the better translation from the Athabascan is The Great One. The mountain is called Denali by both indigent Alaskans of all races and long-term residents, and Mt. McKinley by the tourists.
It was the interfering, now it all Feds that named it after the man from Ohio. There is a deep under current of resentment from indigent Alaskans agains the Feds that come in and force change on their traditions. It has been Denali for centuries, McKinley had nothing to do with it.
Sorry, we will keep Mount McKinley.
Its official: Denali is now the mountain formerly known as Mount McKinley.
With the approval of President Barack Obama, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell has signed a secretarial order to officially change the name, the White House and Interior Department announced Sunday. The announcement comes roughly 24 hours before Obama touches down in Anchorage for a whirlwind tour of Alaska.
“I wouldnt allow him to do it until after he climbed it first.”
We want him to do it during Avalanche season! With a guide that does not know better...
I wouldn’t be surprised if he pulled a fast one and renamed it “Obama.”
And what was the mountain called before McKinley got shot?
It was named Mount McKinley in 1896, and the name was widely publicized in 1897, all this years before McKinley was shot in 1901.
Where does the President get any authority to name anything on his own say-so?
Naming mountains is a prerogative of Congress, or whomever they delegate the task to, not the President.
Besides, naming it Denali is naming it after a Indian god, so that is mixing religion with the state.
Where’s Barry Lynn of the Freedom From Religion organization when you need him?
"that damm big mountain there"
From the article:
“The move elicited praise from Alaska Governor Bill Walker, a Republican turned independent, and Republican elected officials, who more typically are critical of an administration they see as hostile to the oil and gas interests of their state.
“Id like to thank the president for working with us to achieve this significant change to show honor, respect, and gratitude to the Athabascan people of Alaska,” said Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, who led the fight for the Denali name in Congress.
Obama will meet with a group of Alaska native leaders on Monday in Anchorage, as well as with Walker and Murkowski.”
This is just a poke at Boehner, and a very expensive indication that the One is now officially lame duck.
President McKinley was from Ohio, and never even visited Alaska. The people of Alaska will not oppose this at all. They already call it Denali. So, there is no opposition, except in Ohio, since the 70’s, when is the first I remember it was proposed by Alaskans to change the name.
If I were an Ohio congress critter, I would just figure out how to rename something that’s named for some liberal icon within the state, such that Obama couldn’t do anything about it. Touche.
Oh, shut up. It was named after McKinley when he was a presidential candidate, by a gold miner. Even Palin is on-board with this, she’s referred to it as Mt. Denali in several speeches over the years.
The next president should symbolically rename the largest open garbage dump in the world as Camp Barack Obama.
Renaming it “Mount Elizabeth Warren” to pacify American Indians?
Alaskans need to boycott odumbo and keep him out, he is nothing but trouble. I have no doubt he will screw up that state as well.
Denali is not a religious word, it means “the high one” or “the great one” as in highest or greatest mountain.
When I first read this, I thought it was a joke. But Obama’s the joke.
This post is satire, right?
Bingo! We've got a winner!
