Retired Four-Star General Jailed Over Chinese Takeout

A retired four-star U.S. Army general was out on bond Tuesday after being taken to the Fayette County jail over the weekend for allegedly ordering Chinese food without paying for it .....

....... Fayetteville police Chief Scott Pitts said that after his order from the Royal Chef restaurant arrived at his home, Livsey tried to pay the driver with a debit card that was declined. When Livsey offered to pay with a check instead, the driver told him checks were not accepted by the restaurant and he would have to take the food back, the police chief said.

That is when Livsey allegedly grabbed the driver's throat and facial hair, pushed him and pinned him against a refrigerator in his kitchen. During the assault, police said, two people in the home took the food, placed it on a counter and began eating it.

Officers went to Livsey's home in the 200 block of Carriage Chase.

As officers tried to handcuff him, Livsey resisted, according to the police chief. The struggle created a small laceration on Livsey's arm. Fayette County EMS was called to the scene to treat the injury and police tried to handcuff Livsey again.

The police chief said Livsey tried "to punch one of the officers and kick another one all while making threatening and disparaging remarks."

The retired commander said there were several guests at his house at the time of the incident. He said he sent his assistant to the restaurant to pay for the food and give the driver a tip. Livsey also said Royal Chef wanted to drop the incident but the Fayetteville police made "a spectacle of it and a spectacle of me." ........

“Bedgood [Livsey’s personal caregiver and driver] said he left to pay the food bill in person at the restaurant, and when he returned, police in force had Livsey in cuffs outside with individual police units stationed at several intersections in the neighborhood.”

Sounds like the police might have been doing the drinking. WTF is the “...individual police units stationed at several intersections in the neighborhood”?

Were they preparing for an armored assault by some of the retired general’s old units?

There was no reason for your ridiculous comment.

Had you read what was readily available, your error would have been obvious.

My opinion is based on my experience. People who stiff delivery drivers and resist arrest are rarely sober. You are entitled to your idiotic opinion; it fits you

I'll never get used to seeing these old timers and all the valor awards. The Army just doesn't hand out Silver Stars like that anymore.

And how does an INFANTRY officer get a Distinguished Flying Cross?

I gather that you are not very well familiar with the Vietnam War and the Korean War. Bill Livsey was a very distinguished combat leader.

Given that he had an attendant, perhaps Alzheimer’s instead of or in addition to alcohol. Despite his age, he looks fairly beefy - I wouldn’t want to tangle with him.

I would hope that the court and prosecutor would get him an evaluation and the help that he needs.

Sounds like the General has a touch of Alzheimers, or some form of dementia. Age almost doesn’t matter, when someone is truly angry. My dad was about 86, and while recovering from a surgery, he became physically abusive to the nurse’s aides.

My diminutive, elderly Alzheimer's patient, aunt, asked her 6'6" son-in-law of 40 years to help her stand on a kitchen chair, he thought it was an unusual and even dangerous request but she kept insisting, so he carefully helped her stand on the chair.

She next told him to come and stand in front of her, which he dutifully did. Then she slapped the living crap out of him. She said she did it because the shirt he was wearing was ugly.

He gently helped her down and promised her he wouldn't wear that shirt any more.

There's a moral to this true story some where but I can't find it.

That is both sad and funny. I know it took some degree of control for her son in law not to retaliate, even though he would not want to ever admit it. One moral to the story is to never underestimate what a senior is capable of. GrandMa Moses (in a heavy shawl and creaky rocking chair) she wasn’t.

The local newspaper from that area had a fairly long article on this incident. I find this telling:

“Livsey on Aug. 17 received a $12,000 special conditions bond from the Fayette County Magistrate Court. A condition of the bond required that Livsey enroll in an alcohol abuse treatment program.”

In May 1984, and until his retirement on June 30, 1987, Livsey served as Commander-in-Chief, United Nations Command/Commander-in-Chief Combined Forces Command/ Commander, United States Forces, Korea/Commanding General Eighth United States Army.

I was in Korea from '85-'86 and he would come on the SFRTS Radio and spout off about how "My soldiers are ready - their tanks and guns are ready - do you hear me North Korea? We're ready so come on down!"

i would look at my calendar and mentally ask that they just stay the hell up there - there were only weapons on the base for 5%-10% of the personnel because "That's all that would be left after a first strike".

I can understand his frustration if there was an actual error with his card and then his check was refused - food was already in status where it couldn't be legally used and would have to be thrown out. Hard to believe he would actually try to steal such a thing.

And I guess you missed the part where the attempt to pay was made after the incident with the general had already taken place.

Of course he drove down there and paid after the first two attempts to pay were declined. Why would he drive down there to pay before his employer's payments had been declined? He still drove there and made the payment before his employer was charged with a theft which the police knew he hadn't committed. They also knew he hadn't grabbed the delivery man by the throat, grabbed him by the facial hair, or pinned him against the refrigerator, but they charged him with that too.

Honestly, I don't understand why any FReeper would be calling for the general's head for crimes he didn't commit. SMDH

I'm familiar with the fact that the Silver Star used to be an end of tour award.
