Fox News staffers warn Trump to back off of Megyn Kelly after feud reignites

Just flagging this so that we have an easy point of chronological reference for The Day Fox’s Trump Coverage Changed.

The truce is over.

I liked The Kelly File much better without @megynkelly. Perhaps she could take another eleven day unscheduled vacation!

"@mstanish53: @realDonaldTrump @megynkelly The bimbo back in town . I hope not for long ."

Roger Ailes allegedly warned Trump two weeks ago that if he didn’t lay off Kelly, he and the network would “go to war.” Well, here you go. War.

It's been 19 days since the debate- @realDonaldTrump has made his feelings clear. But THIS needs to stop http://t.co/8BmVPZTGdp #let-it-go

— Bret Baier (@BretBaier) August 25, 2015

i like @realDonaldTrump but his personal & professional attacks on @megynkelly r unwarranted-unacceptable- has 2 stop- @foxandfriends

— Brian Kilmeade (@kilmeade) August 25, 2015

Easy, Mr. Trump. http://t.co/NhSd8KqeH4

Wish pal @realDonaldTrump would cool feud with @megynkelly Point is made boss. Now world needs you to use bully pulpit to address big issues

It’s going to be weird when Hannity hosts his next “Trumpmania! The New American Revolution” special and can’t invite the man himself on to comment. Anyway: Why’d Trump restart this fight? I can think of two explanations and the one you prefer will depend on whether you think Trump operates largely via unthinking ego or wily media savvy. Explanation one: It’s pure hubris. He’s soaring in the polls, he’s (sort of) filling football stadiums with devotees, and he’s the hottest ticket on cable news. He could pick up the phone at any time of day or night and instantly get put on the air on CNN, MSNBC, or Fox. Maybe he figures he’s so bulletproof right now that he can take on Roger Ailes, the most powerful man in conservative media, and win. What’s the worst that can happen? If Fox cuts him off, he’ll spend the next six months doing daily call-ins on CNN and MSNBC about what a loser network full of overrated losers Fox is.

Explanation two: It’s all part of his anti-establishment game. Trump’s core message to Republican voters is that powerful interests, including and especially interests that are ostensibly allied with them on the right like the GOP leadership in Washington, aren’t really looking out for them. On the contrary, those interests routinely sell out the concerns of their base in order to please their wealthy benefactors. Immigration is the ultimate example. A war with Fox will slide easily into that narrative. Apart from a few Trump loyalists like Hannity, he’ll say, Ailes and his network have been bought and sold by the same donor-class losers who are backing Bush and Rubio. They’re an establishment outfit that shouldn’t be patronized by conservatives who want “real change” in Washington. Fox’s leverage against an antagonist like that would normally be to cut him off entirely, but like I say, Trump’s the biggest name in media right now. He doesn’t need Fox to get a TV megaphone. And if Fox takes him on by cutting coverage of Trump way back and unleashing its hosts to excoriate him, it’ll only seem to prove Trump’s point that the network has an anti-populist agenda (with Trump himself being the avatar of populism in this formula). He’ll be frozen out of Fox forever as a guest, in all likelihood, but he’s already lost various media jobs in the course of running for president. What’s one more?

Exit question: How will Ailes play this? I think Inside Cable News is right that it’ll be a “slow play” strategy where Trump’s coverage gets gradually rather than dramatically reduced to make it harder for Trump to claim that he’s being blackballed.

Update: War?

Update: Full-court press from the Foxies:

My friend @realDonaldTrump has captured the imagination of many. Focus on Hillary, Putin, border, jobs, Iran China & leave @megynkelly alone

"What most every poster seems to have overlooked, is the fact that Kelly brought this new barrage on herself! Last night on her first show back she went right after Trump in a cheap, snarky manner. Trump’s tweets were in response to that nonsense, NOT the debate debacle!"

I tried to get a transcript off of the Fox News-Kelly File site, but when I search for Trump, I get a segment interview with Ben Carson. Don't know if it is operator error or Fox making retrieval difficult.

A president referring publicly to a reporter as a “bimbo” on social media is hardly humorous. It’s a personal insult, beneath the dignity of the office. Can you imagine Reagan doing that in public??? Trump should temper that side of his persona if he wants to win the nomination. He’s still doing great things for the election run, and he’s changing the Leftist rules of the game (especially for the GOP), but he has to know what the limits are that WE set (as opposed to the ones that the slanted media sets).

Correctamundo. Kelly is hiding behind guests and now the boys at Fox. Brave lady.

It’s my understanding that there was a segment with her and Chris Stirewalt, the FOX digital politics editor, wherein they went after Trump rabidly.

Presidents should not have a twitter account.

Why do people think we want to hear every little thing that seeps into their minds?

I wish some other candidate would come out and say THAT.

There ya go.

Most really do get it. The rest of these frauds and assorted fools are hoping something sticks.☺

It seems like quite a few people are suffering from acute Trump Derangement Syndrome.

It’s like he just went around and peed in a lot of people’s cereal right while they were eating it.

"I wish some other candidate would come out and say THAT."

Why not just come out and say "I'm an old fart" while he's (or she's) at it? Look, I have sympathy for your point of view, but the reality is social media can no longer be ignored by any candidate who desires to win.

She is easier on the eyes and ears than Megyn too.

She din’t come across as all uppity and overly dramatic too.

It does look like a set up for ratings by Fox. Her first show back and she baited Trump. That doesn’t happen without the Fox brass signing off on it beforehand.

This morning when I went to FB she appeared on my page. I had befriended and stopped following her after the debate. But her she was all re established. So I repeated the actions. Her numbers are way down.

It’s ridiculous how a so called fair and balanced network is so public in its role as establishment King maker

This is the state of American culture

The corruption

Uppity?

What man uses terms like this? Just curious, is chris a female name? You know, like Pat?

I agree...really. And I understand.

Perhaps they could come out and say something about whining to the world, but not the person.

It is possible to have some decorum on Social media.

He doesn’t drink.

I think it’s put on, so they can kiss an make up down stream at some point with huge ratings. He’s playing us all like fiddles.

I heard years ago that Hume got Kelly hired at Fox. I guess she used some other men to move on up.

Thanks for the link. It proves my suspicions. Fox is nothing near a “news” network. Everyone of the talking heads really are talking heads. Put something stupid on the teleprompter and they’d read it.

Shannon Bream is a good interviewer. And has a dignity that Megyn lacks.

She doesn't have a hammer voice like Megyn and she'll never show up on Howard Stern.
